Hi, I incorporated a function in my code that whenever I use a string variable in an sql statement if the string contains a single quote it will encase it in double quotes else single quotes. Queston: How do you handle a string that contains both single & double quotes (i.e. 12'X7") Here's the function:

Hello All, I am creating a vb.net app that conncects to mysql with the corelabs provider. This app will be deployed on our intranet. My question is this: Do I have to create different user for each host? For example, my ip range is 192.168.1.*. Can I create one user with this host "Range" and allow them to connect. If so, how do I...

Hello, In my MySQL database, one of the fields eople have to fill in is "DOB" (Date of Birth). I have now managed to begin inserting data into my DB via a form, the data type for the DOB field is "DATE", but every time I add data and then check my db, I see the DOB displayed as "0000-00-00". Has anyone got any idea how I could put this...

Hello, Everything is beginning to work, but there are still a few issues left. Please forgive my ignorance and hence stupid questions (Newbie). I can now enter data with no problem, I get no errors, however, when I check the contents of my DB, 2 fields display nothing. The Fields PostCode (VARCHAR(10)) NOT NULL and Email (VARCHAR(80)) NOT...

I have a database table with a field that is indexed as a "full-text" search, since I want the capabiity. However, I also want the ability to quickly retrieve records from that table that are ins "sorted-order" by this very same field. Do I still need to create a "regular" non-full-text search index to have this capability? Or will the...

I have inherited a table where date information was saved from PHP as a VARCHAR. (Sigh.) This means that the so-called date fields look like this : August 1, 2005, 9:09 am EDT October 13, 2004, 12:28 pm EDT This makes them essentially useless for sorting and logical evaluation. Understandbly, the MySQL date functions don't seem able to...

I realize there are many ways to handle Apostrophes in sql statements. The problem I'm having is comparing a string with an Apostrophe entered by the operator against the field in the DB (ie Field: Customer Name against entered name by operator which includes an apostrophe). The function I use works well with the string (what it does is...

I am looking for a recommendation for an introductory database design book which will enable me to design my first database. It should cover the basics such as normalization and entity-relationship diagrams. If it is oriented towards MySQL, so much the better. Thank you

I notice that on unix the default for case sensative is off which means tables created with upper case need to be referenced in sql as upper case. It seems that if the case sensative variable is set to 1, then select emp works as well as select EMP. Is there any reason not to set it to 1? Also, is there an ansi standard for this? I could...

Is there any way in MySQL Admin to generate a print-out that shows the structure of a table in a database? I really don't like having to document this info by hand writing it on pieces of paper. Thanks

This is not a MySQL question per se. That is, I am not asking a language question, but a design question. But I will be writing the code in Perl/MySQL and it is likely a common issue. Here is the situation. My site will have pages that will have a dynamic number items, each with there own associated fields. Let's say it is a list of books...

Hi, I am trying to do a query like: (SELECT * FROM table1 ORDER BY frequency DESC LIMIT 50) ORDER BY name; Where the top 50 frequency values are then sorted by name. When I try this, it displays each equal frequency value sub sorted by name (so all freq = 50 are shown a-z, then all freq=40 shpwn a-z etc), rather than showing the top 50...

I want to use MS Accesss as a front end for an existing MySQL database. Since Acceess doesn't have the same data types, eg. ENUM, am I tied to the smaller subset of types supported by Access? I'm assuming I have to duplicate the MySQL schema within Access then link the resulting tables. Garry

I've Googled this, but can't find an answer to my problem. When a user selects a page with the recordset I want it to list dates that fall into a certain range, related to CURDATE(). The range fields are start_date and end_date, which are both DATETIME column types. Using BETWEEN won't work because it won't list a date that starts BEFORE...

http://dev.mysql.com/doc/mysql/en/freebsd.html says: You can link MySQL on FreeBSD 4.x against the LinuxThreads library, which avoids a few of the problems that the native FreeBSD thread implementation has. For a very good comparison of LinuxThreads versus native threads, see Jeremy Zawodny's article FreeBSD or Linux for your MySQL...
