restoring a 4.0.17 mysql server without a mysql dump file

Maybe. I'd try setting up a server of the same version (or as close
as you can get; actually I think you have pretty wide latitude in
minor versions here) and putting (*copies*) of the data files in
place. Try this on a machine of the same architecture as they were
produced on. Be sure to get the ownership on the files right
(everything owned by the user MySQL runs as). You probably need
more than just the innodb files (I believe the schemas are still
in .frm files in subdirectories) . Install MySQL, shut down the
server, copy over the recovered files, and restart the server.

You may need to set up a MySQL user in the privilege tables (which
are not innodb tables) if the installation didn't set one up
initially.

Now try to do a mysqldump. You might need to do things like
REPAIR TABLE.

I'll give it a shot. Copying the data files over to the new db use to
work great but I have not have much luck with innodb tables.
