New to MySQL

I'm new to MySQL. I have a copy of MySQL on my PC but it appears the
only way to create a database is through a shell.

I have a copy of MySQL-Front but I can't get it to connect to the
database. I've used localhost and root and no password but it gives
the error "Cannot connect to MySQL Server on "localhost" !

Any ideas or is there another way to create a database without using
the shell.

Thanks

Mike

Is MySQL Server running? (Control Panel -> Admin Tools -> Services, look up
"MySQL" and see the service status)

Does the database exist by the name you are using? (If you haven't created
it yet, probably not.)

Do you have privileges to connect to that database using root and no
password? (Hint: do you have privilege to connect to any databases on this
server using root and no password?)
Any ideas or is there another way to create a database without using
the shell.

Download MySQL Administrator:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/administrator/1.1.html
and MySQL Query Browser:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/query-browser/1.1.html

This allows you to keep track of the MySQL Server, see databases, create
databases, manage users and passwords, etc.

Thanks Bill,

I run the MySQL command line client and it asks for a password, so I
enter that and it gives me mysql>. This, I asume, is me now logged
into the MySQL database.

I have checked if MySQL Servier is running and under MySQL is states
its "started" - "Automatic" .

I doubt there are any databases in there as its from a fresh install.

I downloaded the MySQL administrator. When I run it it askes for
Server host, port, username etc. I'm guessing its localhost, port 3306
and username root. This gives me an access denied.

Any ideas??

Sorry but I'm very new to this.

Thanks

Mike

Yeah, and learning all the basics from newsgroups is not a good plan.
Newsgroups are a better resource for specific questions that aren't covered
well in the docs.

You should start reading the documentation. The MySQL online docs have a
pretty good tutorial about setting up a new database. Start here:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.0/en/tutorial.html

Docs for MySQL Administrator are here:
http://dev.mysql.com/doc/administrator/en/index.html

Thanks Bill.

I can now create a database etc and I got all of my last issues
working.

Now I'm trying to get PHP to talk to the MySQL database.

I have MySQL installed and PHP. Both up and running.

I have updated the php.ini file with the following...

magic_quotes_gp c = On

doc_root = "C:\Documen ts and Settings\Admini strator\My
Documents\PHP\P ortableWebAp3\P ortableWebAp3.1 \Program\www\lo calhost"

extension_dir = "C:\Documen ts and Settings\Admini strator\My
Documents\PHP\P ortableWebAp3\P ortableWebAp3.1 \Program\php\ex t"

Everything else I have left the same. I have updated the path in the
windows system variables to include...

C:\Documents and Settings\Admini strator\My
Documents\PHP\P ortableWebAp3\P ortableWebAp3.1 \Program\php

Then I try and run the following PHP script...(passw ord obviously
blanked out). I've tried it with both ways, with " and with '.

<?php
// Connecting, selecting database
$link = mysql_connect(" localhost", "root", "*******")
or die('Could not connect: ' . mysql_error());
echo 'Connected successfully';
mysql_select_db ("test") or die('Could not select database');
?>

This is what I get....

Fatal error: Call to undefined function mysql_connect() in C:\Documents
and Settings\Admini strator\My
Documents\PHP\P ortableWebAp3\P ortableWebAp3.1 \Program\www\lo calhost\dbtest\ dbtest2.php
on line 3
Any ideas what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks

Mike

I was getting the same error. Use google groups and look under alt.php
for the topic "Install problems - php5, IIS 5.1, Windows XP Pro,
ISAPI" where Martin Valley and myself finally work out this problem.

My favorite troubleshooting method in cases like this is to google for the
error message.
In this case, I'd use a quoted phrase containing most of the error message
(without the specific mention of your paths and files), plus one more word
to narrow the search to PHP issues.

Google for: "Call to undefined function mysql_connect() " php

http://www.google.com/search?q=%22Ca...t%28%29%22+php

Here's a good discussion on this error, found by the above google search:
http://drupal.org/node/27119

"In php's documentation, they stated that they have disabled mysql support
by default.
To fix this, find the line:
;extension=php_ mysql.dll
from your php.ini file and remove the leading semicolon to uncomment it
like so:
extension=php_m ysql.dll"

There are other recommendations worth reading in that drupal.org thread.

Bill K.
