Database design suggestion needed

-
Hi,

I have the following table:

CREATE TABLE user_account
(
id....
email_address ......
password .......
activated...
......
)

where the email_addres serves as the username. When a user signed up for
an account, the 'activated' entry defaults to 'off'. The user will then
have to check his email account and go to a link to activate the account.

What I would like to do is make the email_address changeable and the
user has to verify that the new email addres is valid by again visiting
a link first.

This means that the new email address has to be stored somewhere.

There are two options that i can think of.

1) Create a new table as follows:

CREATE TABLE updated_email_a ddress(
(
user_account_id ...
new_email_addre ss...
)

2) Store the new email into the user_account table.

CREATE TABLE user_account
(
id....
email_address ......
new_email_addre ss <--------------
password .......
activated...
......
)
Design wise, which is the prettiest method?
Or is there another solution besides the above two?

Thank you.

From those two, I suggest using the same table. One extra column won't
do much harm, it's 1-1 related to the other material in the same table,
and queries and checking is much simpler with the data in same table.

Hi Everyone, I have a design related question (in C++) that I am hoping someone can help me with. It is related to my previous post but since it was pointed out that I was more or less asking the wrong questions about the wrong 'topic' (polymorphism) I have posted this new question. Please don't see this as a spurious attempt to repost :-) As mentioned previously, there is a very real problem I am trying to solve, but I have reduced...

Hello all, Over the years as I design more database schemas the more I come up with patterns in database design. The more patterns I recognize the more I want to try to design some kind of generic design patterns that can be used and shared amongst many sub-schemas. For example, the grouping of entities. I may have the following tables: employee, product and client. These tables have no direct relationship with each other. But...

Hi: Some time ago I developed a program in Access, and separated the database and the program itself (using the normal access tools).We have the db on our server and the programin the desktop system. I have modified the program a number of times, and now find that I need to change the DB slightlt. This appears to require that I REMERGE the data base and program, and I have no idea how to do that. Can someone give me some pointers,...

I'm using Access2000. I have just designed a database which seems to be operating very slow on a network. There are currently only a few records in it. Should I be compacting it now before it gets busy with usage ? The database has OLE bounded fields where pictures are linked to a network folder where the pictures are kept. Will this linking of pictures to respective records over time hinder the speed of the database ?

Sometimes I find myself stumbling over Python issues which have to do with what I perceive as a lack of orthogonality. For instance, I just wanted to use the index() method on a tuple which does not work. It only works on lists and strings, for no obvious reason. Why not on all sequence types? Or, another example, the index() method has start and end parameters for lists and strings. The count() method also has start and end parameters...

I have a split front end/back end system. However I create a number of local tables to carry out certain operations. There is a tendency for the front end to bloat so I have set 'compact on close' I think that I have read in some threads (althoug I cannot find them now) that others place such tables in a local, linked database. I could do this but I am interested to know what would be the advantages. And disadvantages, if any. Any...

I have a database documentation question, but I am not even sure how to phrase it properly so I don't know where to start looking for answers. We are developing a database that is based on several different data standards and schema. I'm finding it confusing to keep it all straight. What's this field for? Which standards document is it based on? What are the permitted values? Which business rule governs it? In theory, we do have all...

My clients have asked me to maintain a database that was developed in- house. It's pretty good, considering the developer isn't a "programmer". The first thing they want me to do is to split it into a Front End/ Back End, which is very sensible. However, there are a number of ad hoc queries that are required to be available to all users, which can be edited, deleted or created "on the fly". The most sensible solution would seem to be...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
