Granted User Cannot Access Database (help please)

Hello all,

I'm relatively new to mysql and I'm having some trouble creating a user
that can access a database that I've created.

Here's what I've done:

1. As root, created a database called "tool_competenc e".
2. As root, created a couple of tables in the tool_competence db.
3. As root, created a user "called tool_comp_user" and flushed
privileges:

mysql> GRANT select, insert, update
-> ON tool_competence .employee_info
-> TO tool_comp_user@ "%";

4. As root, checked grants using "show grants for tool_comp_user; " and
it reflects the granted privileges.
5. Logout of mysql and login as tool_comp_user: "mysql -u
tool_comp_user"
6. As tool_comp_user: "use tool_competence ;" and I get the following
error:
ERROR 1044 (42000): Access denied for user ''@'[mydomain].com' to
database 'tool_competenc e'

Does anyone see anything wrong with this process or have any idea what
might be causing my problems?

Thanks in advance for any help,
Bart

I realize now that in the above error message, user is ''. Why it did
not recognize the user when I logged in, I don't know. For some reason
it is now recognizing the user correctly and everything is working as I
would expect.

Very wierd because I was very careful about how I was logging in. And
haven't changed the way I was logging in since the problem was
occuring.

Although it appears not to be an issue now, I would gladly accept any
insights into what may have been going on if anyone out there has any
theories.

Thanks,
Bart

I have been working hard to clean up my code but I am still wondering why all incoming records go to the "AddNew" part of the IF statement and never to the Edit alternative. I believe that it must be because my rs.index never really receives the value from the cell in the spreadsheet that it should use to compare to the corresponding field in the Access DB. I have named the field "rtitle" in Access and made it an index called riskIndex. I am an...

I noticed the following issue posted as a double-hop issue in many discussion boards but found no answers that explain how to pass the second hop with windows auth from IIS ASPX page to remote SQL Server. Problem: -------------- I am trying to create an asp.net website with integrated windows authentication to access SQL databases. IIS resides on WinXP and SQL Server on Win2000 SRV. Both are in the same NT Domain. IIS and SQL Server...

G'day, I have a silly and simple problem that I need some guidance with. Due to the way our network is set up, I am unable to use the group permissions for Access and have had to implement log in procedures via a log in table within the database. This works fine. I have now expanded this table to include further data about the authorised user – Power User, Team Leader, & Facilitator. Depending on the user’s status as to which one of...

At the bare minimum there will be a login user who only has read access to the users table so that users can log in. Once a user has been logged in successfully I want to escalate that user's access level to one appropriate to their role, which will include switching the postgres user they are...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
