What is the best/easiest means to return the serial/volume number of the drive containing the OS using VB.NET? I'm looking to get this information as a unique ID for activation/registration of a custom application so as to tie the software to a single PC. I need something that will work with 98, ME, 2000, XP, and newer. Or if anyone has other suggestiosn on best means to generate an ID to tie to a single PC for licensing I'd...

I am trying to write a portable script that will find removable media, such as compact flash, sd card, usb, etc. drive and then upload files from the media. I want this to be portable so that I can write and maintain one program for both Linux and Windows. Each platform uses different functions so even if I could find two platform dependent functions that would be fine. Basically, I would like to avoid checking fixed disks if possible. If...

I was asked to get my daughter a flash drive. She needs to use it to copy files to it so she can transfer the files at school to her desktop at home. I've never used one but I figure some of you have. I see flash drives from on the net from 128 meg up to 16 gig. Prices range from $20 to $600. I see a lot of those ads referring to cameras. Are there USB flash drives specific for cameras and others for computers? Or do they all work...

Hi all, This one's driving me up a wall! We have a small office network, Windows SBS 2003, nothing fancy - recently upgraded from an old Compaq running Novell. Back in the day we used the "F" and "G" drive letters for our main network drives. This worked wonderfully until we started using flash drives recently - replacing floppies for portable data movement. Seems that, even tho we have 2 mapped drives as "F" and "G" Windows (XP and...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
