I'm no good at math, either. That's why I learned to use a computer to test all the possibilities very quickly. Like this:

>>> l = range(10)
>>> for i, x in enumerate(l):
...     if (x**2) + (l[i + 1]**2) == 85:
...         print x, l[i + 1]
...         break
