I'm installing a new device due to the shoddy administration of a few servers I recently came to admin, and I was wanting to make sure a constant problem they were having didn't happen again.
The / (root) dir would routinely fill up, leaving the other partition where the app was running, at maybe 20% utilization, but the app would be worthless as we wouldn't be able to do anything on the box (and the app would start to fail as well).
So I was wondering what the "best practice" partitioning scheme was. I'm currently looking to separate /, /home, /var, and /opt, but was wondering if I was missing anything, and about how big each of those might need to be (percentage-wise compared to the disk, I'm currently on an 80G disk - this is a dev box so I can check a few things before I start messing with Prod, even if it does suck as it is now).
I was thinking something like / as maybe 10%, swap as about 5%, /home as 20%, /var as 30%, and /opt as the rest (and would probably be where my app would then reside).
Any input on either my scheme or another is appreciated

Which operating system? I only know FreeBSD and don't recall if the Linux kernel would work the same way.
Yeah, I've worked on Solaris, which is roughly what I pulled that from, but I'm going to be using Debian Linux.

Personally I'd give / a little bit more - maybe 12-13%. (So approx. 10GB.) I have it that size and it complained about size even then when I wanted to compile a own kernel. Before and after that however it was fine.
Also, you could have /boot on a separate partition, but that's your choice. Otherwise I'd say your estimates seem fine.
