Hi there,
I got a program to write data to a randomly accessed file (the program
moves file pointer to a certain position of the file according the
current "keyword" and then writes data). It compiles and runs in Win2K
and various Unix and Linux systems. The main program is in Fortran,
calling a data writing library writen in C++.
The weird thing is, it takes much longer elapse time (wall-clock time)
than CPU time (e.g., 20 min vs. 2...

I'm fairly new to XML. As I can see it, XML is a way to organize data
like in a table in a RDB, or the RDB itself. I have used XML in
application data, but did not design the actual XML.
I have a background in both hardware and software. I want to create
an application that will regenerate a resume from the XML Resume that
I have. I would like some people to look over my XML Resume data and
give me suggestions on the XML. This...

Hello.
I've searched all over and haven't seen another thread with this
problem. Please bear with me as I try to explain. thanks. :)
I have some programs that need to be cross-platform compatible (unix
and windowsXP). The first program parses a text file and records where
snippets are in terms of where it begins (char offset from begin of
the file) and length (number of chars).
One can almost use "byte" and "char" interchangeably...

Hello,
I have an application that essentially consists of two threads doing
their things. One thread is a producer, and pushes bytes (of a struct)
into a pipe, and another is a consumer that simply checks the pipe at
regular intervals reads out the bytes. If the consumer extracts bytes
and sees that it's not enough to recast to the struct, it caches it and
waits for more bytes in the pipe.
My question is: Do I still need to maintain...

Hey all,
I'm writing a c++ program that needs to read a file. I'm trying to read
a file that is in the same directory as the executable.
Everything works fine if I execute the program while in the program's
directory. What I need to do is read that file regardless of where
(cwd) I execute the program from, without hardcoding the absolute since
the program might be moved or be in differant locations on other
computers.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
