This may be OT a bit, so maybe someone can point me in the right direction.
I want to test a script that sends out an e-mail. I want to test it locally
on my Mandrake Linux 8.2 box.
It runs OK on my host (pair.com) but I have to upload it each time I want to
test it.
Is there something I need to do in order to test locally? Do I have to set up
an SMTP server? Is that hard? Anything else needs to be done? CAN any of this

WHen I use php's mail() function, the recipient sees the hosting userID -
NOT GOOD!.
Are there any settings I can change or code it a different way?

I've spent a couple of days on this and I'm to the "bang-my-head
'gainst the monitor and babble in tongues" mode.
First - SuSE Pro 9.3, Linux 2.6.11.4-21.7, Apache 2.0.53, PHP 4.3.10
I have sendmail running on the local server - mail from unix (1) mail
and mutt work locally on the server. This is, specifically, sending
mail to a localhost user or another user off on the net somewhere
works fine.

I'm working with a LAMP platform - PHP 5.1.4, MySQL 5.0.21, RedHat
Enterprise 4... Running Sendmail 8.x.
I'm using the PHP mail() function to send some confirmation emails out
when a user submits a form. My understanding is that this is basically
a wrapper for sendmail (specifically, sendmail -t -i).
In my development environment, this works great. Everything is fast
and wonderful.

writes the mail to disk for unit testing and works fine when I use
thunderbird to send mail to it and used to work fine under windows
