The use of new Image() in a function preloads the image for the page?

I have a function where I create a "new Image()" to retrieve the dimensions of an image I want to display.
After that function is finished I call another function which by using innerHTML shows the spesific image in a div by using the img tag.
Will the image still be proloaded in the browser's buffer even if thevariable which holded the Image() object no longer exists (the function containing it ended)
