intranet - open file

2 New Member
I have very basic knowledge but have used some Java on web sites I have built using Front Page. I would like to build an Intranet with pages that have links by images that can open files (and their associated programs) from a web page. Can Java do this for me?

Are you talking about Java or Javascript? They are two different species of beasts. Or perhaps you are talking about JSPs?

I have incorporated code samples from sites such as javascript.internet.com into web pages to produce slideshows or rotating images etc., for example where in the header of the web page you introduce a section of code with the tag <script language="JavaScript"> and then add more code into the body. I know that you can open a file such as Word directly from a link in a web page, but is it possible to launch other programs such as Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator with such code and the actual file that you wish the program to display?

You didn't answer any of my questions directly but it seems you are using Javascript so I'll move this to the Javascript forum for now.

P.S It helps to respond directly to the questions that you get asked when other people are trying to help you.

hi ...

basically you cannot launch programs from a webpage ... imagine that would be possible ... a webpage might do evil things on your machine ;) ... but you mentioned that you have a intranet-site. so with that you could have some more possibilities ... because you may rely on specific security-settings of a browser and even its version. in case you use IE ... and only IE? :) ... you may use some activeX-controls that allow a lot of things that a 'normal' browser would (and should) never do! ... like reading files, registry data and may be you could run any program ... but i'm not very familiar with activeX ... and the only hint i could give, is to try a search at msdn or google for that ...

kind regards

ps: may be that this thread and the link you find in the first reply could be a good start to get an idea of it ...
