Test for existence of ActiveX on Client

What is the best way to test for the existence of an ActiveX Control on a client? I tried this:

var control = new ActiveXObject("namespace.classname");
if (control == undefined)
do something...;
else
do something else...;

It seems that the code just stops execution if the activexobject doesn't exist. Any help?
