javascript and poorly formated html

I was wondering if someone could point me to a tutorial or API Doc that
would be useful for manipulating poorly formated html returned through
an an XMLHttpRequest Object.

like something that might be html 3.2 or maybe not even be labeled, as html.

thanks,

How

p.s. I am very new to web development so forgive the ignorance please.

I'm not aware of anything like this for JavaScript, and its a sufficiently
nasty problem that I'd tend towards running the data through a server side
process to clean it up first (probably involving Tidy or mod_perl and
HTML::TreeBuilder). I'd also include a cache to save having to repeatedly
reprocess the same data.
