possible viewport question, need to control what portion of div contents appear when overflow:auto and too much content in div

I searched comp.lang.javas cript on Google Groups but I didn't find an
answer when I searched for "viewport" or "viewport div" or any
combination of words using "viewport" so now I think I'm searching for
the completely wrong thing. Perhaps someone can tell me what I should
be searching for?

I've got a div with overflow set to "auto":

overflow:auto

I'm using it for an Ajax chat application I'm trying to build. The div
fills up with messages, then overflows. The new messages, which I want
the user to see, appear at the bottom of the div. I don't know how to
force the div to scroll down, so the user will always see what is at
the bottom of that div.

If you want, you can try to see what I'm talking about, though
everything is still in a rough form. Try to go to this page:

http://www.bluewalldev.com/secondroa....php?groupId=6

Login with this info:

user: person
password: test

I wish I could tell you where the login screen will be, the but the
graphic designer is working on the site right now and everything
changes every hour.

Logging in will take you to another page, you'll have to hit the back
button to get to the "chat" room.

Thanks to anyone who takes the time to answer.

Sorry, cancel this post. I just posted it and then, finally, after a
lot of searching, I found a post that answered all my questions:

I would appreciate if somebody explained to me: a) why the following HTML correctly handles overflow in FireFox but does not in IE b) how that can be fixed. In FF when the browser window is resized so div d2 doesn't fit in d1, d2 gets a horizontal scrollbar. In IE div d1 is resized to fit d2. <body >

I believe this is a Firefox bug but I was hoping someone found a workaround. I have implemented drag and drop functionality, but if I try to drag an element from a div that happens to have a div with an "overflow: auto" it seems to lose the onmouseover event for my target. Anyone come across this issue and found a resolution? Please advise. Here is a link to my code.

I have a webform that uses an ActiveX control. I want the user to automatically download the ActiveX control if he doesn't have it. How can I do this? Also, does it need to be registered too? Can this be automated? Thanks, Robert

I just implemented an "overflow: auto" for a div in the main message window: http://www.auriance.com/docs/interaction/ This works as expected in Internet Explorer and Opera, but in Firefox it doesn't. There shouldn't be a scrollbar on the page, but instead, on the div that shows the messages. Any idea? Thanks,

I have a webpage that has 2 main DIVs - a title div and a content div. I want the title dive to always "stick to the top of the page and not scroll, regardless of the size of the window. The content div should have a scrollbar that sits underneath the title div. I have some event handlers in Javascript that handle calculating the size of the content div. Everything works fine in IE/Firefox when I remove the DTD from my document...

I posted the problem below in alt.www.webmaster before, but no-one knew the answer, however someone suggested this group as a good place to ask. I am trying to fit images into a browser window using CSS and in particular overflow:auto; The idea being that if a user's window is too small the image becomes scrollable (horizontally) and a horizontal scrollbar appears. It works nicely in Firefox and Opera but with Internet Explorer 7 a...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
