Converting character entity codes into characters using JavaScript

Basically I'm looking for a function that will parse a string and
replace any entity codes it finds w/ the actual character.

For instance the function would convert "Hello Wor ld" into "Hello
World"

Has anyone ever heard of a function that can do that?

Thanks!

A HTML parser can do that so doing e.g.
var div = document.create Element('div');
div.innerHTML = "Hello Wor ld";
and then reading out the text content of the div element should do:

function htmlToText (htmlMarkup) {
var div = document.create Element('div');
div.innerHTML = htmlMarkup;
if (typeof div.innerText != 'undefined')
{
return div.innerText;
}
else if (typeof div.ownerDocume nt != 'undefined' &&
typeof div.ownerDocume nt.createRange != 'undefined')
{
var range = div.ownerDocume nt.createRange( );
range.selectNod eContents(div);
return range.toString( );
}
else if (typeof div.textContent != 'undefined')
{
return div.textContent ;
}
}

var text = htmlToText("Hel lo World") ;
You might want to add some object detection to prevent errors in older
browsers like Netscape 4 or IE 4.

Hi all, I have a question if it is possible to manipulate the settings of character encoding in Ms Internet Explorer 5.0, 5.5 and 6.0. The problem is that the default instalation of Ms IE seems to have hard selected default encoding to "Western European (ISO)", which means iso-8859-1. When browsing pages with some Central/Eastern European characters these are converted to iso-8859-1 so displayed wrong. I would suppose the...

How do I display character 151 (long hyphen) in XHTML (utf-8) ? Is there another character that will substitute? The W3C validation parser, http://validator.w3.org, tells me that this character and the ones around it are illegal - then, after resubmission it flags no errors. So, are there any illegal characters between 0 and 255 in the UTF-8 character set or is it just my imagination that the W3C validation parser thinks there are -...

I'm using the following meta tag with my documents: <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content= "text/html; charset=us-ascii" /> and yet using character entities like &rsquo; and &mdash; It validates at W3C and WDG, and runs in standards compliance mode in Firefox 0.9. What I'm wondering is, is this a good practice? I assume my pages will load faster if declared as using the

The following statement does not yield what I expect it to: var txtNode = document.createTextNode("ESI&minus;"); txtNode holds a value of "ESI&minus;" instead of "ESI-" where '-' is the character entity reference for the minus sign, that I expect. I have tried other variations. I am working with Mozilla and IE because I want to make NO use of extensions/browser-dependent code, and both (try to) implement the DOM to varying degrees.

In a VB.NET code behind module, I build a string for a link that points to a JavaScript function. The two lines of code below show what is relevant. Hello all, I'm having a little problem, The UTF-8 parser we are using converts the newline entity ( ) within an attribute that we are using to paliate CSS limitations. After the parser has gone through the document, the entity is converted to \n, which then effectively tosses out the window the behavior we are getting by keepinig the entity AS IS within the document.

I am new to xml. I have a routine that parses xml files using a regular XmlReader class. Unfortunately, the XmlReader chokes (throws an exception) on character codes such as "&Eacute;". I resorted to streaming the file first and replacing all the character codes with their corresponding characters (copying the file while replacing character codes at the same time) just to get things going. In the case of &Eacute; I replaced it with...

Hi all. This is a rather long posting but I have some questions concerning the usage of character entities in XML documents and PCI security compliance. The company I work for is using a third party ecommerce service for hosting its online store. A few months ago this third party commerce site began using PGP file encryption on XML files (e.g. web orders) transferred to us as part of the ongoing PCI security compliance.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
