i get the error "cannot find symbol" when compiling the following program

You never actually make an instance called keyboard.

Add this

Keyboard keyboard = new Keyboard();

Replace Keyboard with whatever the name of the Keyboard class is. Make sure that class is in the same folder as this class, since you don't use a package, they need to be in the same directory.
