Learning Java and Eclipse

Hello. I am interested in learning about and using the Eclipse framework
and Java -- both of which are new to me. I have prior programming
experience with VB.NET and c#.NET; but not Java.

As such, I am trying to find the best approach to learning Java and Eclipse.
My current approach is to first focus on learning Java, then approach
Eclipse after nailing down Java fundamentals. I'm currently working my way
through "Head First Java", then intend to turn to "Eclipse 3.0 Kick Start."

However, I just discovered the Eclipse versions of CodeRuler and Code Rally
with stated objective of teaching Java and Eclipse simultaneously. I would
like to believe that this is a practical path for a Java novice as it could
conceivably shorten the time it takes to learn and become proficient in both
Java and Eclipse.

Here is where I would really appreciate the perspective of those who are
knowledgeable of both Java and Eclipse. Is this really feasible? Is this a
realistic path for a Java and Eclipse newbie? All thoughts are appreciated.
Thx,

Donovan.

For the last two years, I've been using Eclipse as my Java IDE, and I'm very happy with it. I've just switched from Linux to Mac, and while Eclipse itself works even better, I have a problem with the source for the Java libraries. In Eclipse, one can get instant access to the JavaDoc for any class, whether it's part of the current project or a standard one such as, for example, java.util.Vector. In order to do this, Eclipse needs access...

I wrote a Jython class that inherits from a Java class and (thats the plan) overrides one method. Everything should stay the same. If I run this nothing happens whereas if I run the Java class it says: usage: java fit.FitServer host port socketTicket -v verbose I think this is because I do not understand the jython mechanism for inheritance (yet).

I'm trying to debug a simple Java UDF written in the DB2General style within Eclipse. I'm getting a java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError when I execute the set() method in the UDF. I know that the UnsatisfiedLinkError has something to do with a DLL that is not visible but I'm not sure why I'm having the problem given that both db2java.zip and db2jcc.jar are visible on my classpath and each of them contain the COM.ibm.db2.app.UDF class with a...

Hi, It seems to me that measuring productivity in a programming language must take into account available tools and libraries. Eclipse for example provides such an amazing IDE for java that it is no longer obvious to me that one would be much more productive in python for medium sized projects. Sure, all that Java static typing can be painful, but Eclipse takes

Yet another silly question, but this just might be the crucial one. In answer to another of my silly questions, Björn Höhrmann pointed me to http://home.ccil.org/~cowan/XML/tagsoup/, and as I read down the page I came across this paragraph: Warning: TagSoup will not build on Java 5.x or 6.x! Due to a bug in the versions of Xalan shipped with Java 5.x and 6.x, TagSoup will not build out of the box.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
