Velocity - Java

Hi,
I'm a young web-programmer (I'm actually just a Student).
So far I've only been working on PHP+MySQL.

I work part time for a company, and now they want me to work on one of
their website : http://www.makemeheal.com
The thing is, I'm not sure what language to learn so that I can start
working on it.
There are no more tech guy there, and the owner is not an expert.
All he could tell me was that there is something about "Java" and
"Velocity" in it.
I looked up on the Internet,"Veloc ity is a Java-based template engine.
It permits anyone to use the simple yet powerful template language to
reference objects defined in Java code".

Now my question is, do I need to learn only Java? Only Velocity? Or both?

If you had read more about velocity you would have seen:
When Velocity is used for web development, Web designers can work in
parallel with Java programmers to develop web sites according to the
Model-View-Controller (MVC) model, meaning that web page designers can focus
solely on creating a site that looks good, and programmers can focus solely
on writing top-notch code. Velocity separates Java code from the web pages,
making the web site more maintainable over the long run and providing a
viable alternative to Java Server Pages (JSPs) or PHP.
