Applets are not working in IE 6.0/win98

I noticed on my PC with win98/IE 6.028 applets are not working.
Applets are working when I use Netscape 7.1. When I open the DOS win
and I check for a Java version I am getting:

C:\WINDOWS>java -version
java version "1.4.1_02"
Java(TM) 2 Runtime Environment, Standard Edition (build 1.4.1_02-b06)

On IE Tools-Internet option-Advanced- I see icon of Java (Sun) -
checked.

Any ideas why it is not working?

There are quite a few possible reasons. I'll just cover a couple.

If you indeed are using the Sun JRE (plugin), check the java console for
exceptions and post the information you find. Note that the JVM you find
via the command line (dos shell) doesn't really tell you anything about
which JVM your browser is using. Also, 1.4.1 is quite a bit out of date.
Unless you really need that specific version, you might want to install the
most recent stable release.

If you are using the MS Java VM, then there are several possibilities.
Probably the most common is that the applet was compiled with the 1.4 SDK
which (by default) generates class files not compatible with the MS Java VM.
(see: javac ... -target 1.1). Also, the MS Java VM would have trouble with
classes only available after version 1.1.4, 1.1.7 or 1.1.8 or so.
Swing/JApplet would certainly be a problem.

Just a few thoughts for you.

Thanks for your answer.
On IE Internet Option - Advanced - SUN Java options are checked, MS
Java is unchecked.
Under Tools - I see "Sun Java Console" option, but when I click on it
- nothing happens.
On Setting - Control Panel I see icon "Java Plug-In". When I click on
it, it opens a window with checked options:
Show Console
Bowser options - Netscape, IE

Advance Uninstall utility I am using shows me all Plugins in IE - I
don't see there anything about Java.

And applets are not working :----------(((

I am also having the exact same problem. Some applets changed at
http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=97 and
http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=1

These are used to test broadband dowload times. They changed the
applets, now they won't work.

I get nothing but a blank applet box. The applet at Linkline still
works ( http://www.dslreports.com/stest?loc=2 ).

I downloaded Java 2 v1.4.2_04 from the link as suggested, but still no
applet. I am using IE 6.0 on Windows 98.

In IE, I get the message "load: Class Speed not found"

In Netscape I get "applet speed error:Java lang.class format error:
Bad major version number"

I've made sure I uninstalled all Sun Java, then reinstalled with no
luck.
I've run the tests at the Sun site with no luck. And I've tried every
corrective action they've suggested.

(I cannot display the Java Console either.)

I saw somewhere where someone had the samr problem and fixed my
reinstalling MSJVM (3805 build, 3810 update) but I'm already at that
level.

I've gotten this to work on my thinkpad with W2000.
Any ideas how I can fix this?

Speed.class (from speedtest.jar) is a JApplet.

Since this applet uses swing, there's little reason to generate classes that
are
1.1 compatible.

You're still using the MS JVM in IE. That's the error message you would see
when trying to load class files compiled with a recent version of the Sun
SDK.
These class files are not compatible with the MS JVM, unless the -target 1.1
option is used.

For IE, you'd need to download and *properly* install/enable the Sun Java
plugin. See: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp

As far as Netscape goes, try installing and using Netscape 7.1.
