explanation of JIT?

jc
hi

i recently had a conversation with someone who said that an advantage of C# over
Java is that C# uses JIT. now, i have a very simple understanding of what JIT
is, and thus didn't know if this is true/false, and if it is indeed true, then
why is Java not using JIT? Is it purely due to the "age" of Java, i.e. we now
know that JIT is the way forward, and so C# used it from the word go? What are
the advantages/disadvantages of using this?

thank you.

JIT Compiling means "Just In Time..." it is a dynamic compiler that
has been in Java since JDK 1.2. There are some disadvantages, so Java
allows you to turn it off. Java, by the way, was not the first
language to use the concept of JIT.

Typical Microsofties, though, taking an age-old concept and claiming
it's unique to C#. Sheesh, makes you wonder why they didn't patent
the idea of a "variable."

RE: patent comment

Don't laugh, but I went to a class on PLM given by Intel
over 20 years ago and the manual had a section on assimbly
language AND there were these asteristics next to the instruction
names with a foot note that said that Intel was copyrighting
these words; words like "add", "sub" and so on.

Hi all. I'm building a development webserver (redhat-based). I'm trying to compile PHP (v4.3.4 if anyone cares) with all the features I might require in the near future. I've ran into a problem with trying to understand what all those ./configure options do. Some of them are fairly straight forward and need no explanation at all, but others are rather mysterious. For example, --enable-magic-quotes . What are the magic quotes? The PHP

I am writing a chapter for teaching OOP in Python. This chapter is intended as a brief introduction to replace the more complete discussion in Learning Python, 2nd ed, pp. 295-390. I need to explain instance variables. What I'm looking for is the best compromise between brevity and a full explanation. The students are non-CIS technical professionals ( engineers and scientists ). At the point they need this explanation, they have...

Howdy All, I have a Windows Service that often stops in its tracks with no exception and no explanation on our QA system. During testing on the development machine, it can handle any workload, and complete with no problems. Even during testing on another test machine, it can handle any workload, and complete with no problems. This behavior has been tested multiple times.

Is there a decent explanation of how menu merging with MDI forms work in VB.NET? I've read through the online help and it still seems that whenever I change menus around or whatever, it breaks everything. VB6, as repetitive as it was to retype menus, was at least consistent. It seems that VB.NET throws menu items wherever it feels like.

Ok first off, i am a total beginner at this groups stuff and i have no clue how this works. This is probabaly the wrong group for my problem but i will post it anyways. Learning by doing right? I will post a code snippet and explain my problem. I cant seem to find a logical explanation why this problem would occur after trying to figure it out for a few hours. However I am probably just blind and/or stupid and you will realise where i go...

In the interests of me saving hair, can someone please explain to me what's going on below? Why doesn't == work in comparing two int's when cast as objects? They're the same type. Note that it worked for strings. Thanks in advance, Damien

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
