Can there be multiple Application Pool on the same subnet?

Here is my issue: I recently added a second web server on my network hosting Sharepoint running on Window
2008R2. The other web server is running on Window 2003. since I added the second web server, users have been getting Unauthorized: "Access is denied due to invalid credentials" error message. From what I have read so far on this subject, everything seem to be pointing to multiple applicaton pools. Can you help with this issue.
