Guilty as charged m'Lud. Some of the alt.* groups have strange readership and I
didn't know which group would offer me the best chance of a meaningful reply.

The preferred approach in that case is cross-posting--sending one
message to several groups at once, rather than to each one individually.
That way, everyone can see all the responses in one place (which makes
your life easier too), and it gives newsreaders the opportunity to mark
the message read in all groups where it appears once the user has read
it in one group.
