making a site grey out

Hi,
I was wondering, how to make a site grey out, something like this:
http://www.lancome-usa.com/makeup/foundations.aspx
if you put your mouse over a shade like 'Absolute Pearl 05' you'll get
a 'QuickShop' button, click that and a popup comes up, causing the
site behind it to grey out. I'd like to try something like that for
my personal site, but not sure how it's done.

Thanks.

Absolute positioning & opacity or a filter for MSIE.

Please don't do that. There are a few sites that do that, maybe
because they think it's kewl or something. Perhaps there is something
on the grayed out page I need to see, and I can't see it because the
"grey" color is too dark.

Something like this for an application in a controlled environment
might be okay, but for the WWW, where you do not know anything about
the user (except maybe their ip address), IMHO, this is not a good
thing.

Wow. That site has one of the worse cases of imageitis I've ever seen.
Even the text that says how many items the visitor has in their cart is
an image.

I take that back -- the number is text. But still, every single menu
item (and rollover) is an image. What is the point? It would have been
so much simpler and better to use text.

That is the most bloated, annoying site I've been to in a long time.
That webmaster is no master! I highly recommend you follow these wise
words that were told to me a while ago: just because you CAN do
something, doesn't mean you SHOULD do it. Always keep your visitors in
mind when designing your site.
