CSS and Firefox

20 New Member
I've already gone through validation of both the HTML and the CSS.

I even added background-color entries for my CSS.

For some reason the CSS won't show in Firefox 2, but will work fine in IE 7.

Anyone have any suggestions?

In your style link, try changing it to href="/pageDefault.css" with the slash.

You should be using a strict doctype also. Use this one:
<!DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 4.01//EN"

I already validated both the HTML and the CSS before I posted here.

I also tried the DOCTYPE both with and without Transitional before I posted here.

It validated with Transitional, so I left it in.

I tried adding the slash in after reading the suggestion; still not appearing correctly.

When I open the web page file from my hard drive it displays correctly. But when I use Firefox to open the page from the web, it does not.

Any other suggestions?

Now I see the problem. Your server is serving the css file as text/plain. You need to change your server settings.

The doctype change I was suggesting because all new pages should always use a strict doctype. There is no need for transitional for new pages.

I sent something in to my server but here's the rub... it appears fine in IE 7. So I'm curious as to how it's the server.

Because IE, apparently, is interpreting the error as you want it to be while FF is interpreting it as what your server says it is. Your server is saying it is text/plain but you css file should be serving it as text/css.

Yup, it was with my server alright.

Needed to update software.

Thanks for catching that, it would have taken me forever.

I am having the same problem. How do I tell if it is for the same reason, and if it is how do I correct it?

Cheers,

Two ways.

1) Check your server settings. If you don't know how, and you are running Apache, ask on the Apache board.

2) Get the Firefox extension (you are using Firefox, aren't you?) LiveHTTPHeaders and check with that.
