css browser caching

Hello to all,

I have a site in progress that uses css-p, even all the images are i
the css file, I am only using bg images. My question is simple, if th
style sheet references 40 images but my index page only uses 7 of thos
images will the browser download all the images that are present in th
css file even if they are not needed on the page. If so this will mak
my homepage too large in file size. I have been informed that onl
Firefox grabs just the images that are referenced to the page. How tru
is this and could somebody possibly enlighten me to the exact process o
how a browser such as IE downloads images from the css file

Not usually. Some browsers do but most don't. I think IE for Mac (and
maybe only old versions of that) was the one I noticed downloading all
referenced images.
