Tables

Hello,

I have been always using div's for web site design and no tables.
However, I have to admit that sometimes tables are useful when
creating for example a form.

What is your advice? Only div's with no tables?

What do people usually use for forms when they use no tables.

Look at this form:
http://www.telerik.com/client.net/lo...on/b29t-t.aspx

Thanks,
Miguel

There is a big misconception that *all* tables are to be avoided. False.
Use tables for tabular data, just avoid their use for general layout
purposes. I consider forms to be generally tabular in nature, since
there is a direct relationship between a label and its control. A
2-column table can be perfectly acceptable, but sometimes a fieldset is
a better choice. Like anything else, it depends on the particular data.
Look at this form:
http://www.telerik.com/client.net/lo...on/b29t-t.aspx
You should take a look at it with JavaScript disabled. It's not good.

But as far as I can see a field set is not easy to use for aligning
the form elements. I would like to have something like:

First Name: first name textbox

Last Name: last name textbox

Address: address textbox

I think table is the best way to do this right?

I mean, can I make this with CSS?

I have been using CSS for sometime and replicating this kind of forms
using divs and css seems a really hard work if compared with using a
table.

Any idea?

Thanks,
Miguel

Yes, it can be done without tables. Not really all that difficult
either. Here's an example that I've used a few times, with an ordered
list and styled elements therein:

http://beta.ksscholl.com/jquery/form2col.html

This is but one possible solution, and I'm sure there are some who will
reply that this method is faulty in some way. But it is, IMO, cleaner
than using a table, and degrades gracefully.

It certainly is a nice looking form. And works very nicely in
Safari at least. Whether it is cleaner than using tables is hard
to say.

Nice and appropriate use of the list element as well.

Really nice form. Maybe the best I have seen which does not uses
tables.

I hope you don't mind that I follow your code. :-)

Thank You Very Much,
Miguel

Not at all ... glad to share. Be aware that I am using a bit of the
jQuery Javascript library for a few enhancements there. If you leave
it out, nothing in the layout will be drastically affected, but you
may wish to manually add the class "radioBtn" to any radio buttons,
and the class "checkBox" to any checkboxes to retain vertical
alignment.

Here's a few others on some current projects using the same general
methodology:

Hi, I'll be very grateful if somebody can explain me why my Opera 7.23 (runing under linux) doesn't show me inner tables. Using below code I can see only "inner table 1". There is no problem with other browsers (I checked it under Konqueror). Thank you in advance for your help. Regards. /Mariusz <HTML>

Does anyone know how to use VBA to relink tables between two MS Access databases? We have two databases, one with VBA code and the other with data tables. The tables are referenced by linked tables in the database where the code resides. If we move the database with the data tables to a new directory, the links are no longer valid. I tried to update the links by changing the Connect property and refreshing: Set td = db.TableDefs(0)...

Problem: My company generates its own data export from a propietary database. These (free) tables can be read in C#.NET using a Visual FoxPro driver (vfpoledb). I can read each of the six tables into its own datatable, modify them, and add them to a dataset. It take approximately 15 minutes to pass that dataset to Crystal Reports (45 minutes if the report uses three subreport datasets). Then it takes over 7 hours for Crystal to...

In followups by Brian O'Connor (ironcorona) to other posts, he repeats the idea that using tables in CSS is not something that should be done because IE doesn't support it. Of course I'm not happy about the fact that IE doesn't support CSS tables. But what can one do about that? And tables of one type or the other are needed in some cases (regardless of whether some people feel it is appropriate or not). So the issue I and considering...

Using Access 2003 front-end, with SQL Server 2005 backend. I need to make the front-end application automatically refresh the linked SQL Server tables. New tables will be added dynamically in the future, so the front-end application must have a way to keep up with this (instead of manually linking them).

Hi I have this database that calculates and stores the incentive amount earned by employees of a particular department. Each record is entered by entering the Date, Shift (morn, eve, or night) and the 'employee name'. There is another table which assigns an ID to the Shifts, i.e. 1,2 and 3 for morn, eve & night shifts respectively. From the mother table, the incentive is calculated datewise for each employee as per his shift duty. In...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
