Floated div with border problem

Hey all,

May have missed this in the FAQ, advice or article links welcome.

Have a content div with a navigation div floated left and an
advertisement div floated right. I would like to have a border
going around the content, the two divs and right down to the bottom.

So far, all I've got is this:

http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~alex/test/corporate/

CSS:

http://www.redbrick.dcu.ie/~alex/tes...orate-main.css

Ideally, I would like the two floated divs to extend downwards as more
content is added, and taking the border with it. I tried messing
around with height: 100%; (for the floated divs) but didn;t really
understand what it was doing.

Any ideas?

(Also, when I take out the border (in Opera 8.54), the margins jump a
little for the entire #contentcontain er div - what's up with that?

Any help appreciated.

Alex

Hello. The issue is quite known: you have a block-level container holding a set of floated elements and you need that the container's content height take the floated elements' dimensions into consideration. E.g.: <div class="images"> <div class="image"><img src="example1.png" width="160" height="120" alt=""></div> <div class="image"><img src="example2.png" width="160" height="120"

Is this a known problem with IE6? I have a provisional two column layout, the left menu column is positioned absolute. The contents column is positioned relative. The contents column has an image floated right. The placement is there in IE6 but not the image. It does not matter whether the DTD is strict or transitional

Okay, so my subject sounds a bit crass. As much as I'd like to totally embrace css and avoid "deprecated" usage, sometimes the deprecated stuff is so much easier and more effective. Plus, it at least does what I want it to, while I'm left puzzled trying to make a css implementation do the same thing. Here is a simple example. I want to have four identical-sized images displayed in a two-by-two arrangement, wtih room for a centered...

http://www.web-ho.com/blog/test.html is a model to illustrate the following problem: The second paragraph ("Sed nec augue ... Fusce nec massa.") is a blockquote set out with a gray bar with border-left: 5px solid #ccc; As can be seen by adjusting the window width so that the second paragraph is partly to the right of, and partly below the image, the gray bar hides partially under the image, it is not pushed to the right with the text...

Hi there, I have a problem with some CSS I'm writing and I was looking for a little help. I have a nav bar at the top and left side of my page in CSS which work fine. The remaining space has a div which I'm using for body text. Floated to the right of this are two image boxes and a broken out quotation from the page (this box is wider than the images). The layout is working, except that the text in the main section doesn't seem to wrap...

Using a technique I found here: http://www.vertexwerks.com/tests/sidebox/ I created these "dialogue" boxes: http://www.ebph.org/test.htm In IE6, the text does not wrap correctly around the image, which is floated right. Any ideas / suggestions?

I'm experimenting with converting a site from a table layout to CSS. I'm floating three DIVs in a row for the top of a website (a logo, navigation buttons and a email list signup box). The DIVs have a grey background. When I view the page in Firefox, I get what I hoped for: there is a solid grey rectangle at the top of the website. When I view the page in Internet Explorer 6 (WinXP), there is a gap between two right hand DIVs (i.e. a...

Hi! I have multiple floating boxes inside a main box that has a fixed dimension. The floating boxes may vary in number and i want them to stay lined up along the top of the main box with a horizontal scrollbar to see those that are rendered outside the main box.. but since they are floated next to each other they wrap and i get a vertical scroll bar. i want any extras to float out the right side of the box and stay hidden. This example has...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
