Problem setting CSS padding in a <a> tag

Hi,

I am having a problem when setting the padding of <a> tags within a
link.

A stripped down version of the page can be viewed at:

http://www.martynbissett.co.uk/_sfa/index_test.php

Its is very basic but looking at the source CSS code (embedding in the
page, not seperate for now), you can see that for #navMain a { I have
set the padding as 7px (vertical) and 13px (horizontal). Now this has
occured before but my vertical padding does not show and instead it
would appear that the height is shrinking to the size of the text.

Now the next oddity, I have set the a:hover background color to
demonstrate this. When you roll over the link the padding does appear
and it appear that the link target area is as specified. How come the
background of the parent element is smaller, shouldnt the parent
element grow to accomodate the elements within?

Im sure there is some CSS thing I dont yet understand so if someone
could point me in the right direction that would be great.

Cheers

Hi, me again

Sorry, I should have mentioned also that I have tried setting the
line-hieght property for the links but it sits slightly of center in
IE.

http://www.martynbissett.co.uk/_sfa/index_test2.php (please view in IE)

However, this is what I am currently using to overcome it to provide
some padding (and do away for now with the a:hover background change).

I need some help with a multilevel sorting problem with the List<>. I have a List<ItemToSort( see below ) that needs to be sorted in the following manner: Sort by Level1Id ( ok that was the easy part) Within the unique Level1Id's, sort by Level2Id Within the unique level2Id's sort by name, then description. I looked at doing this with some foreach and list.FindAll() and copying the list into a new list, but this had some code smells....

Hi, I have a query. All html tags start with < and end with >. Suppose i want to display either '<' or '>' or say some text like '<Company>' in html how do i do it? One method is to use &lt, &gt ,&ltCompany&gt to display '<', '>' and '<Company>' respectively. But is there any freeware code available which could implement the above functionality without having to use &gt,&lt and such stuff???

Since the include function is called from within a PHP script, why does the included file have to identify itself as a PHP again by enclosing its code in <?php... <?> One would assume that the PHP interpreter works like any other, that is, it first expands all the include files, and then parses the resulting text. Can anyone help with an explanation? Thanks, M. McDonnell

Same thing g++ complains when using hash_map<>, but is happy with map<--I understand hahs_map is not standardized, but since the compiler didn't complain something like 'hash_map<not defined', I suppose it's supported and should behave well when I used it correctly. BUT it didn't. Here is my code snippet: class MyKey { public: virtual void foo() { return; }

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
