CSS Absolute and Relative Positioning

I can't get my menu bar to remain relative to the westar logo.
On the homepage it looks ok
http://www.westar.com/test/index.asp
, but once the main content table on the page gets longer the menu bar
shifts downward. Like on

http://199.217.163.45/intranet/WDT_logos.asp

I don't know why the menu seems to care how long the content section is
when it should stay relative to the westar logo. I thought I indicated
that in my css file, but since I don't know css well at all I guess I
did not.

The top menu bar was is a "Page Include" on all my pages and uses its
own style sheet as well as the web content pages have their own style
sheet they reference as well.

Some things to sort out before you start worrying about the menu
placement issue:

a) Using a doctype that triggers standards mode is generally preferable.
b) Serving XHTML is almost always better avoided, HTML 4.01 is
preferred.
c) Validating your code can be a helpful tool: http://validator.w3.org/
and http://jigsaw.w3.org/css-validator/ Currently your HTML makes no
sense (multiple head's content before the <html> element etc.).
d) Tables are for marking up tabular data. Your code is a peculiar hodge
podge of tables used for layout with styled div wrappers.
e) &nbps; should not be used to create margins and/or padding. A string
of joined &nbsp;'s is silly.
f) Inline CSS should generally be avoided.
g) Div's and spans are "last resort" markup to be used (almost) only if
there is no semantic element to attach styling to, they cannot replace
semantic markup. (for example your footer should be marked up as a
paragraph)

I disagree with this point. I have NEVER had any problems with XHTML, which
don't also exist in HTML. Just make sure the img and similar tags are closed
using the <tagname options /> method rather than <tagname
options></tagname>.

To quote w3 when browsing your site (at least I presume its your site):

The ">" are thanks to "<br />" meaning "<br>&gt;" in HTML.

Now you've had problems with XHTML which don't exist in HTML :)

Go ahead...
I have NEVER had any problems with XHTML...
That may be caused by your ignorance on what to look for?
Just make sure the img and similar tags are closed

There it is; one of the basic dumbness'es built into the X scheme from
the start, as commanded by representatives from Microsoft none the less.
It has kept the crowd fooled since it first appeared.
rather than <tagname>option s</tagname>.

That last part of yours has the decency to it that it constitutes fully
balanced markup.

So far you have proved nil knowledge about NET/NESTC/TAGC

I beg to differ; well, actually, I just differ.
c) Validating your code can be a helpful tool:

Yet you just suggested to 'use a doctype that triggers a mode'.

(Incidentally, I just stumbled upon this a few hours ago

and still wonder what it means.)

Well; there is (was?) a "default fallback" when nothing else helps :)

No thanks, I have a hypertext version complete with pictures and music
at home.

'I wonder what that means' meant nothing more here than that I see a
couple of words that do not connect to a (part of a) sentence in my
brain.

What am I not understanding about the definition of { position: absolute; }? "The box's position (and possibly size) is specified with the 'left', 'right', 'top', and 'bottom' properties. These properties specify offsets with respect to the box's containing block." Please take a look at http://gavelcade.com/abspos.html and help me understand why my nested, absolutely positioned divs are being positioned with respect to the page rather...

Hi, I have several absolute positioned elements inside an absolute positioned DIV. I would like one of the nested elements to have a dynamic width. I set it's left and right attributes to 5, so the the element should have a width = parentWidth - 10; This is the desired behaviour, but it won't work. I still have to specify a width or the element has a width of 0. Setting the width to '100%' doesn't give me the desired effect; it takes...

I'm slowly (very slowly) working my way thru the bizarre and sadistic world of control positioning in MultiViews (ASP 2.0). An absolutely positioned element is positioned relative to another element, called the containing block. Here comes the definition...

I'm just learning xhtml & css, primarily from westciv's online tutorials and css guide. I've run into a couple of problems with a page I'm developing that I can't figure out. The first problem is that I would like to display some text on top of an image within the header. I've tried using absolute positioning to specify where the phone number should appear in relation to the parent div (#header). However the text appears to be positioned in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers.
