Differences between a search engine, a subject directory and a meta search?

Are the differences between a search engine, a subject directory and a
meta search engine significant for an ebusiness web site owner?

A meta search engine merely uses ordinary existing search engines.
A subject directory classifies websites into some category.
Could anyone point me towards the differences between these three that
are significant for an ebusiness web site owner?
I can't think of any major differences between a search engine and a
meta-search engine for a web site owner.

Any help appreciated.

You can simply forget about meta search engines as there is nothing you
can do to improve your position in any one of them and, frankly, you are
not going to get any (significant) traffic from them anyways.

The "classic" search engines are very important, but there is not too many
of them you have to worry about: Google, MSN, Yahoo are going to be the
bulk of your traffic, maybe few more. The best way to learn about
positioning in those would be to stick around in
alt.internet.se arch-engines group. We have its Web interface here if you
like: http://www.1-script.com/forums/newsgroup1-.htm

The directories are also nice to have under your belt as some people tend
to trust directories more because they are manned, and the listings should
have been approved by a human, which makes them more important to some
people. This is actually a drawback, too: since they have to be approved,
they usually have to wait months and years until it happens. So,
directories are probably not going to be the mainstream of your search
engine -related promotion.

I would suggest that you also have to look at pay-per-click (PPC) type of
ads. one of the most prominent, but by far not the only one out there, is
Google AdWords. Pay them a visit, see if it works for you.

Good luck!
Sincerely,
Dmitri

Hello, I'm running a site with +20.000 articles. The articles (html files) are saved on the server as txt files. Alle other data (author, date, category and so on) are in a MySQL db. Before we had the articles put in the db also and then performed SQL queries for the search engine. But this is no longer feasable since there are too many articles and the db has gotten too big. The search engine does all of the db and the server cpu goes...

I'm looking for a free open source web site search engine. htdig looks like a good one that's well supported and used in the community. I've read over the feature list and documentation, but I'm confused by one thing. In addition to static HTML documents and plain text files, does htdig also index dynamic pages? I have a MySQL-based company directory that needs to be included in the search results. Any/all comments are appreciated.

Hi, Anyone has the background for explaining? I have made a search on my name and I have got a link to another search engine. The link's title was the search phrase for the other search engine (a wicked phrase). Some but not all of the words of that phrase exist in my website. I reported it and they removed the link but did not give explanations.

I received a marketing call from a guy first showing me my website and then some other website and ranking of that other website. My questions is it worth paying to SEO corporation a $1200 - $3000 setup fee and then $150 monthly to get your website search optimized ? I used the domaintools.com and it seems like my website had higher SEO rating and tag relevance than the example site he was showing me. I did not pay attention to search...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
