AntDB’s First Community Edition Officially Released

26 16bit
On March 1, the Community Edition of AntDB was officially opened for free download. As the first community edition of AntDB database, AntDB-CE (Community Edition) V7.2.0 has complete, easy-to-use and highly compatible features of enterprise-class distributed database product, provides detailed online documentation support, and establishes AntDB Q&A community to facilitate more users.

Ⅰ. The story behind the first AntDB-CE
AntDB database has a long history of development as a "carrier-grade" core transaction database, which is self-developed by AsiaInfo and has been proven reliable in the core system of operators for 15 years. With the iteration of communication technology from 3G to 4G then to 5G, AntDB database has also "kept pace with the times" and completed the "three-step jump": from in-memory database to full-featured, general-purpose relational database, then to a full-stack database compatible with MySQL and PostgreSQL open source ecology, and further to distributed database. Currently AntDB serves more than 1 billion cell phone users in 24 provinces and cities across China, and has been running smoothly for 15 years, taking an important step to export to the outside world after it has been tested by a large number of practice scenarios.
In July 2022, AsiaInfo Technologies released version 7.0 of AntDB, a distributed database, and this launch was also the first launch of AntDB. At the end of 2022, the new version of AntDB database introduced the major updates of "hyper-convergence" and "streaming real-time data warehouse".
AntDB database, which comes out from the communication industry, is getting more and more attention and favor from industry users and developers. After the practical tests of many core systems, AntDB basically keeps the pace of monthly iteration and major upgrade every six months.
In February 2023, AntDB-CE V 7.2.0 was officially released, which is a brand new milestone for AntDB to embrace the market. AntDB Community Edition has three major advantages:
  • Completeness: providing a nearly complete feature set in its entirety, except for some commercial components;
  • Ease of use: supports lightweight deployment, both centralized and distributed deployment, and provides lightweight deployment tools;
  • Completion: The community version released this time already has good compatibility and has completed adaptation with mainstream operating systems and chips.

Ⅱ. Capability interpretation of AntDB-CE
AntDB-CE adopts Share-Nothing architecture, including four components: Compute Node (Coordinator), Data Node (DB), Global Transaction Manager (GTM) and Management Node, where GTM and DB are stateful components and high availability needs to be considered, and the architecture is as follows:

Figure2: the architecture of AntDB-CE
1. Compute Node (Coordinator). It provides SQL parsing, optimization, routing, result aggregation, distributed transaction control and other functions.
2. Compute Node (DB). The component that really stores business data, realizes the horizontal expansion of database capacity by dividing the database and tables, provides various slicing functions and supports custom development; it supports grouping management of data nodes.
3. Global Transaction Manager (GTMCoordinator). Important component of distributed transaction management; It provides transaction IDs and transaction snapshots as well as global sequence numbers and timestamps, and participates in 2PC to provide distributed MVCC and Coordinator capabilities.
4. Management Node(Manager). It manages all the status of the entire cluster nodes such as adding, configuring, deleting, starting and stopping, initializing, and master/standby switchover.
Ⅲ. The long-term strategy of AntDB-CE and AntDB
For AntDB and its users and the community, there are significant meanings behind the release of AntDB-CE:
1. In the context of booming development of domestic infrastructure software, AntDB hopes to bring its experience and technology, which has been deeply cultivated in the carrier industry for more than ten years, to help more users build the capabilities of controllable enterprise-class distributed database;
2. With the power of the community, we can enrich the business application scenarios of AntDB, understand the needs of more industry customers, continuously improve our products, and keep pushing ourselves forward.
3. Together with a wide range of partners, we will play the advantages of their respective capabilities, fully integrate database infrastructure softwares with our partners' industry solutions, and better help customers realize digital transformation and upgrade.
"Working together with partners to build the ecology of information innovation is the development strategy that AntDB firmly implements. Database is not only a technical software, it should be an ecology, and we must join hands with a wide range of partners to better help customers realize digital transformation and upgrade." Wang Li, general manager of AsiaInfo Anhui, expressed AntDB's dedication and determination in community ecology.
