Right-click->View Source reveals this:

and microsoft has mspx

I think they used several different file types, but you would probably be better off researching how they started in Stanford U of California and how they got to where they are now (NUMBER 1 SEARCH ENGINE IN THE WORLD) so they implement many proprietary technologies and file types. I would shoot them an e-mail and see what they say.

Google uses Linux. As far as languages go, they use PHP, Ruby, Python and C that I'm sure of.

As far as file types go, I'm confused by the question. The web is HTML and XML. You don't have much choice and it's not up to you.

I think he means which server side language they use to generate the pages, e.g. PHP, ASP, JSP, Coldfusion, or own proprietary language. Obviously, the end product will be HTML/ XML.
