booting problems

1 New Member
i have a celeron d 330 processor, and i was troubleshooting another pc. I took out the ram and put it in the other pc, then put the ram back into the first pc. Now it wont boot, its like the cpu isnt getting past POST. I have checked the hard drive.. led lights up and it sounds like its spinning up. I have tried different video cards, different monitor, different power supplies, still same problem. All I can get is a black screen. Does anyone know why or what could have happened when I took out the ram and put it back in that could all of a sudden cause booting problems? I am running Windows XP home. thanks

OK. I have one as well running MCE2005. Is your CPU sitting right - check the levers have been pushed down firmly on the socket. Or when you put the RAM back into the PC the other system had blown it for some reason because it was more than the RAM module speeds were able to take. What was the RAM clock speed - 333MHz 400MHz etc and the one that you put into? Usually it shouldn't really make a difference but I'd just check in case that is the problem.

Other than that, I am stumped.

As likely as anything it will be that you haven't quite reseated the ram properly or that you have giggled some other item that is no longer correctly seated.

Check that all removable componets are in there sockets correctly, CPU, RAM, Video Card etc.

You only get a black screen? No BIOS start screen? Does it make any beeps while starting?

Usually would give a bleep of some kind if there is an error. I'd put my money on the vga card not sitting properly.

Is it possible after dismantling the computer the display output was changed from the VGA card to the onboard video to which the monitor is not connected to, this only applies if the BIOS even loads/beeps.

1 beep = OK
3 beeps = Video Card Error

and there are a whole raft of other errors indicated by beeps too.
