9.5 LUW, pointers on running 32 bit client against 64 bit server?

I'm trying to read up on the possibility to migrate a db2 V9.5 server
to 64 bit, and continue running 32 bit application servers (via db2
runtime client, or otherwise). Does anyone have links to this kind of
information? I've google around a bit, and searched the db2 docs
without much success so far? Is it at all possible, what restrictions
apply for such a setup, etc is the kind of questions I would like to
find info about.

Thanx in advance

Lennart,

We ran into those problems with our V8.2 servers. What we do is create a
32-bit instance to act as a proxy for the 32-bit clients and point all
traffic through to the 64-bit instance from this.

Been doing this with both AIX and Solaris at V8.2 level.

Here's an example of what we do ... db264 (port 50064) is the 64 bit
instance, db232 (port 50032) is the 32-bit instance) -

On db232 -

CATALOG TCPIP NODE DB264 REMOTE hostname SERVER 50064;
CATALOG DATABASE DB1 AT NODE DB264;

The 32-bit clients can then connect to DB1 on port 50032 but the database
will actually be on the 64-bit instance.

We've had to do this for three reasons -

WAS4 : old Type 2 Java drivers (32-bit client only)
32-bit Windows V6.1 clients
TSM is either 32-bit or 64-bit (not both) so can't have a 64-bit V9.5 and
32-bit V8.2 on same box and back up both using TSM

Hi Philip and thanks for the info, much appreciated.

In your opinion, would it have made a difference if you had used type
4 driver instead?

In DB2 9, DB2 switched from having 32- and 64-bit instances to having
instances that were both 32- and 64-bit at the same time. There should be
documentation in the DB2 9 and 9.5 information centers on running 32-bit
applications in the new instances.

Hi Lennart,

There are no restrictions on 32-bit Version clients connecting to 64-
bit Version 9.5 data servers. Refer to the connectivity support table
in this topic for details:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce.../c0022579.html

If you are running the 32-bit application server on the same computer
as db2 server, then you need to make sure that you manage the changes
to support 32-bit applications on the 64-bit Version 9.5 data
servers. Refer to these topics for details:
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce.../c0022266.html
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce.../c0023412.html
http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/infoce.../t0023449.html

Now, when you said that you did not find anything in the db2 docs I am
wondering where did you search. I did a search on "32-bit" in the db2
information center search and some of these topics come up in the
first 10 hits. If you narrow the scope to Database fundamentals>
Migrating then you get all the topics in the first 5 hits...

Let me know,

Amyris.

I don't think this will be the case but thanks for the information
anyhow.

To avoid any misunderstandin g, I didn't whine about the documentation.
I can't exactly recall my search term, but I think it was something
like "32 bit client 64 bit server". I opened a couple of topics but
didn't find what I was looking for. Since I'm rather busy at the
moment I hoped that someone in here could point me in the right
direction.

If I where to whine about something it would be the new license, I
spent the last two days figuring out when we started using which
feature in V8 and what additional license things we need to
purchase ... ;-)

I am having a problem executing long running queries from an ASP application which connects to SQL Server 2000. Basically, I have batches of queries that are run using ADO in a loop written in VBScript. This works pretty well until the execution time of a single query starts to exceed some threshold, which I am trying to narrow down. I can typically run 2 - 10 queries in a loop, with the run time being anywhere from under a minute to an...

Hallo, I am coming to this newsgroup with a very strange Problem. I have two c++ files A.cpp and B.cpp....In A.cpp I am creating an openGL window and in B.cpp I have stored the callback functions. Important is, that the object A.o has to be created BEFORE B can be compiled. I am sure that sounds confusing but A.cpp is part of a library that is needed for objects I use in B (kind of client-server thing). So I cannot include a B.h in the...

Hi guys! I found a great article a while ago about how to write client side C#. Sadly, I can't find it again now, but here's the jist of what I learnt to do: 1. Write a C# (or any .NET language) dll. 2. Write a web page in ASP.NET. 3. Put the dll from 1 into the virtual directory that 2 lives in (the root).

I am trying to write an HTTP/HTTPS proxy server in VB.Net 2005. But, I don't really even know how the internal workings of a proxy should act. Does anyone have anything on the protocols used in handling requests by proxies? I have Googled my eyes out....and found nothing. (BTW, props to Google for refusing the ridiculous request for their search results.)

We're in the process of writing a new Windows Forms app and the desktop support folks want for it to be run from a network share. I know it's possible (i.e., just have the framework on the clients and a desktop shortcut to the exe out on the network)... but is it really a good idea? What are some arguments for and against running a .NET Windows Forms client from a network share? Here is my initial list... I'd appreciate any additions,...

Someone made the statement in a newsgroup that most C++ programmers use smart pointers. His actual phrase was "most of us" but I really don't think that most C++ programmers use smart pointers, but I just don't know. I don't like them because I don't trust them. I use new and delete on pure pointers instead. Do you use smart pointers?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
