9.5 LUW, pointers on running 32 bit client against 64 bit server?

I'm trying to read up on the possibility to migrate a db2 V9.5 server
to 64 bit, and continue running 32 bit application servers (via db2
runtime client, or otherwise). Does anyone have links to this kind of
information? I've google around a bit, and searched the db2 docs
without much success so far? Is it at all possible, what restrictions
apply for such a setup, etc is the kind of questions I would like to
find info about.

Lennart,

We ran into those problems with our V8.2 servers. What we do is create a
32-bit instance to act as a proxy for the 32-bit clients and point all
traffic through to the 64-bit instance from this.

Been doing this with both AIX and Solaris at V8.2 level.

Here's an example of what we do ... db264 (port 50064) is the 64 bit
instance, db232 (port 50032) is the 32-bit instance) -

On db232 -

CATALOG TCPIP NODE DB264 REMOTE hostname SERVER 50064;
CATALOG DATABASE DB1 AT NODE DB264;

The 32-bit clients can then connect to DB1 on port 50032 but the database
will actually be on the 64-bit instance.

We've had to do this for three reasons -

WAS4 : old Type 2 Java drivers (32-bit client only)
32-bit Windows V6.1 clients
TSM is either 32-bit or 64-bit (not both) so can't have a 64-bit V9.5 and
32-bit V8.2 on same box and back up both using TSM

In DB2 9, DB2 switched from having 32- and 64-bit instances to having
instances that were both 32- and 64-bit at the same time. There should be
documentation in the DB2 9 and 9.5 information centers on running 32-bit
applications in the new instances.

Hi Lennart,

There are no restrictions on 32-bit Version clients connecting to 64-
bit Version 9.5 data servers. Refer to the connectivity support table
in this topic for details:

If you are running the 32-bit application server on the same computer
as db2 server, then you need to make sure that you manage the changes
to support 32-bit applications on the 64-bit Version 9.5 data
servers. Refer to these topics for details:

Now, when you said that you did not find anything in the db2 docs I am
wondering where did you search. I did a search on "32-bit" in the db2
information center search and some of these topics come up in the
first 10 hits. If you narrow the scope to Database fundamentals>
Migrating then you get all the topics in the first 5 hits...

To avoid any misunderstandin g, I didn't whine about the documentation.
I can't exactly recall my search term, but I think it was something
like "32 bit client 64 bit server". I opened a couple of topics but
didn't find what I was looking for. Since I'm rather busy at the
moment I hoped that someone in here could point me in the right
direction.

If I where to whine about something it would be the new license, I
spent the last two days figuring out when we started using which
feature in V8 and what additional license things we need to
purchase ... ;-)
