Moving tables between an iSeries and DB2 for Linux

I am attempting to implement, what I believe to be, an unusual
scenario, and am hoping to find someone that has experience with
something similar. I currently have a series of physical and logical
files on an iSeries (AS/400, System i5, or whatever IBM calls it
today), version v5r4, and would like to permanently migrate them to a
DB2 UDB for Linux v8 system. All of these files are used by native
iSeries programs (written mostly in CL and RPG), and some are used by
SQL programs, as well. The goal is to make the migration as
transparent as possible, so the programs operate as if the files were
still local.

My first thought was to configure the two systems to communicate via
Distributed Relational Data Architecture (DRDA) facilities, since both
support it. Then I could create a DDM file on the iSeries that linked
to the remote table on DB2 for Linux database.

I still have several questions/concerns about this approach, and if
anyone can provide advice or hints, it would be greatly appreciated.

1.) Can the native RPG/CL programs perform all of their normal
functions on a remote DDM file, including locking a row, read or
position by a key value, update, delete, etc.

2.) How would I configure tables/views/indexes on the DB2 for Linux so
that they are equivalent to the physical and logical files on the
iSeries. For example, a physical file seems equivalent to a SQL
table, but has an optional index as part of the same object. Does this
mean I create a SQL table with an index, and point the DDM file to the
index, and not the table?

3.) Finally, is there another approach that I am not considering that
would meet my requirements? I've looked at the possibility of using
Websphere Federation Server and DB2 Connect, but they seem to only
work via an SQL interface, so the native programs would all have to be
modified to use embedded SQL. This is not really an option because of
the large number of programs in question.

Again, I'd appreciate any advice from someone that has tried something
like this, or even remotely similar.

Hi, I have to move iSeries library to new DB2 database. Is there any easier way to do this moving operation than exporting all tables in iSeries into text files and then import them into DB2 Express? I am looking for same kind of function like db2move between two DB2 databases.

When I run the following vb.net code, I'm not able to acces the my database AMFLIB. I use to be able to access AMFLIB with the old ODBC driver from IBM iSeries Access but now I want to use the new managed IBM.Data.DB2.iSeries data provider from iSeries Access V5R3. When I remove Database=AMFLIB from the connection string, I can connect but as soon as I try to specify a known database (like my good old AMFLIB) I get the following error:

Hey gang, I'm evaluating the CA ERWin product for an upcoming data warehousing project. I'm most excited about the reverse engineering aspect of this system. I've sucessfully tested it on a SQL Server 2000 system, however, when I run it against our iSeries DB2 system (on which our ERP exists), I encounter errors that essentially say that files are missing from our SYSCAT library. I'm not an iSeries expert, but I can say that the

I have been asked to start positioning from DB2 on Windows to helping maintain another DB2 database on the mainframe (AS/400). I am comfortable in DB2 but have never used the green screens and all. To get my footing during the transition phase, I have been trying to explore different tables, run some simple SQL against them, and so on. But it seems that the system catalogs that I use so frequently on LUW are simply not available on the...

Hi there, Does somebody know the efficent way to connect DB2/400? Through iSeries Access ODBC/OLEDB driver or DB2 Connect? Which will more fast and efficent? In addition, does DB2 Connect use APPC over TCP/IP protocol? Or SNA protocol?

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
