Hang on archive

Hello,

Using DB2 8.2 FP 9 - 32bit on Solaris 5.8 and a tape management tool
of Veritas, the archive hangs on occassion. The error is "shmat
failed" in the db2diag.log. Then DB2 hangs and self corrects.

This seems to occur when a backup kicks off, initiating an archive.
But only on occassion.

Our intent is to upgrade but that may take months. This should be
solved first.

Your help is appreciated.

First of, issues like this should be taken up with Support, imho.
Second, you really have to provide more info like exact error codes etc. to
be able to help you.
To quote from Oracle newsgroup c.d.o.s.: "Crystal balls are not being sold
here" or similar...
Be prepared Support will also ask you to gather quite some info for them to
be able to help you.

Having said that, you should have a look at this article on DevWorks:
http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/db...6qi/index.html

It discusses DB2's Memory Model extensively, with specific emphasis on
32-bit environments and the differences between various hardware platforms.
For Solaris (a platform I'm not familiar with btw) there is a section that
starts with:

<quote>
Common problems with allocating database shared memory on 32-bit Sun Solaris

Kernel parameters not configured sufficiently and failure to initialize the
database shared memory properly can lead to failures like the following:

* At database start up time (activate database or database is being
connected to for the first time) - SQL1478W, SQL1084C, hang condition
* At runtime - SQL2043N, hang condition

On Solaris systems, DB2 provides a tool called db2osconf. This tool makes
recommendations for kernel parameter values based on the size of a system.
The recommended values are high enough for a given system that they can
accommodate most reasonable workloads.

The most common kernel parameter set incorrectly is shmmax. This parameter
specifies the maximum size in bytes of a shared memory segment which can be
allocated on the system. If DB2 is configured to create a database shared
memory set which is larger than this, the request will fail. Other kernel
parameters to be aware of is shmseg and shmmni.
</quote>

It goes on describing common issues on Solaris and gives 3 examples that are
extensively analysed.
If you're lucky one of them fits your case, if not.... well, like I said:
contact Support ...

Hi! I need to fresh a zip-archive using zipfile. However, it seems it is no function to fresh the archive. When I use the append-mode of ZipFile, the written file is merely appended to the archive while the old copy is still in the archive. As a result, there are several files with the same name in the archive. Is it valid state of the archive? I would to achieve the result using a delete/remove operation, but it is also is not...

The problem: We have ASP application that uses WSC as data access tier to SQL Server, and it runs well on windows 2000 server IIS 5.0. When we install the application on XP with IIS 5.1 the browser hang from time to time. When testing with a network sniffer we found out that sometimes the browser request an ASP page and don't get a response from the server.

Hi All, I am faced with a horrible hang problem. I have a COM exe server that executes some tasks. The task execution manager is a thread that manages the pool of threads, which is 4 per processor. Each task is processed in a separate thread. Each of the executer threads is an STA thread, and it goes ahead and executes the task. No problems are encountered when tasks are executed one at a time, but when multiple tasks are executed...

I need to store a large number of files in an archive. From Python, I need to be able to create an archive, put files into it, modify files that are already in it, and delete files already in it. The easy solution would be to use a zip file or a tar file. Python has good standard modules for accessing those types. However, I would tend to think that modifying or deleting files in the archive would require rewriting the entire archive. ...

I am having a strange problem with std::string as I am trying to read from a binary archive using Boost serialization. I am new to this, and it is possible that I have not understood the usage. In the code below, the string "faultblock" seems to be causing the problem. The code crashes in the ia...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers.
