Greetings,
I am running DB2 Workgroup Edition on an Intel box with two physical
CPUs. It is running Windows with hyperthreading. Thus, the operating
system thinks it has 4 cpus. I am about to upgrade to another dual CPU
box, but this one runs the new dual core chip. So, after
hyperthreading, it will look like there are 8 CPUs.
Anybody know how DB2 Workgroup Edition will react? Furthermore, will I
be in violation of my license?
Thanks,

news:11******** **************@ g44g2000cwa.goo glegroups.com.. . For Intel or AMD dual core processor you need only 1 CPU DB2 license.
Hyperthreading is not an issue as IBM software license is talking about physicals devices (cores).
Here is the annoucement: http://www.ibm.com/common/ssi/rep_ca...NUS305-080.PDF

You are correct that only 1 CPU license is required per dual-core chip with
DB2, but dual core chips are not the same as hperthreading. Dual core chips
do have 2 physical cores, but they may share some resources such as cache
memory.
Of course, dual core chips are not the same as hyperthreading.
Hyperthreading has no influence on DB2 license, as DB2 license is
talking about cores (hyperthreading is based on one core; eg.
hyperthreading Xeon).
The general rule is: one core -- one license; however for dual-core AMD
and Intel (and OpenPower) IBM makes an exception. The exception is:
only one license is needed for such processors.
Nobody knows how processors will evolve in next 10 years -- but for
sure together with software license polices.

Thanks for the replies. But I am still a little unclear about whether
Workgroup Edition is architected to use 8 processors. Is there some
internal code in place to limit it to 4?
Thanks,
Craig

I don't think that DB2 knows about processors except for licensing. If you
are running 8 agents at once then DB2 will leave it up to the processor(s)
and OS to figure out how to dispatch the processing. There is nothing to
prevent 8 agents from running at once, even on Workgroup Edition on a 4
processor machine (with single cores).
I also think, that you will benefit from the dual-core and
hyperthreaded processors.
BTW, if you issue db2pd -osinfo you can get the information about
number of cores and logical CPUs (HMTDegree):
CPU Information:
TotalCPU OnlineCPU ConfigCPU Speed(MHz) HMTDegree
Cores/Socket
1 1 1 1495 1 1

I am planning to build a server to be used as a SQL Server and web server.
Right now I can only use a single box for both.
I have read some threads were dual processors are having problems with some
parallel queries and the suggestions of having sql server use a single CPU.
My budget is limited so I am debating whether to get 2.6G dual xeon 533FSB
or dual P4 800FSB (DRR@ ram) or stick with a speedy single cpu.
If I get a dual cpu...

Hi,
Is there a reason why we have to pay more for licensing for a different
kind of processor?
Why are we not charged for the Hyperthreading on some processors also.
If Oracle is really conserned about the low end business market (small
and medium), then they should drop their attitude on Dual Core
processors.

Multiprocessing has been pushed into the field as the chip
manufacturers can no longer deliver as they were used to for many
years.
The general public has been conditioned to believe that 1 + 1 = 2 but
this is in fact not that simple.
Although software manufacturers can with some effort adapt packages to
exploit these dual core architectures, the same is not true for other
development work were no large distribution of the application is...

There is a strange freeze/crash only on dual core machines:

Hi,
I have been seeing a strange behaviour when doing some tests on a Dual -
Dual Core Opteron system using Windows XP (32bits with SP2).
In out application we have a wrapper around the thread pool to handle the
work on renderers and CPU intensive tasks. On the Dual - Dual Core Opteron,
the application is correctly starting 4 threads but it seems to be running
only 2 concurrently.

I'd like to use multiple CPU cores for selected time consuming Python computations (incl. numpy/scipy) in a frictionless manner.
Interprocess communication is tedious and out of question, so I thought about simply using a more Python interpreter instances (Py_NewInterpreter) with extra GIL in the same process.
I expect to be able to directly push around Python Object-Trees between the 2 (or more) interpreters by doing some careful locking.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
