Dear Sql Server experts:
First off, I am no sql server expert :)
A few months ago I put a database into a production environment.
Recently, It was brought to my attention that a particular query that
executed quite quickly in our dev environment was painfully slow in
production. I analyzed the the plan on the production server (it
looked good), and then tried quite a few tips that I'd gleaned from
reading newsgroups. Nothing worked....

I wtote a script to change data type for a column in several tables.
eq. alter table CorrectionEQDiv Alter Column qSrc int not null
I'm getting an error saying
"ALTER TABLE ALTER COLUMN qSrc failed because one or more objects

I ran the runstats and try to collect sub-element statistics, but for some
reason, the value of that two fields in syscat.columns is always -1.
Does anyone have any idea?

Hi. I have automatic statistic update turned on for all my databases. Is
this an overhead I can do without? Could I update them overnight when the
database is hardly in use?

it says that volatile tables (ALTER TABLE mytable VOLATILE
CARDINALITY) do not use statistics. I would just like to clarify this
statement. Does this mean that no statistics at all are used when
determining the execution plan? or does this mean that statistics
applying to cardinality are not used when...

I'm looking into the automatic recompilation of stored procedures and
I have been reading up on the "Do not recompute statistics" option on
indexes.
Am I correct in concluding that disabling the "Do not recompute
statistics" option for an index, will ensure that no automatic
recompilations will occur as a result of updates to data in that
index?
Am I also correct in understanding that the "Update Statistics" will
