Average Num of Active Connections On DB2 Instance/ Small NUM_POOLAGENTS

Hello,

I am looking at tuning NUM_POOLAGENTS for many v7.x and v8.x UDB instances.
Aside from logging into each instance and running 'db2 list applications',
or writing a script to do so, is there any way to determine the average
number of connections to an instance?

Also, without getting into detailed hardware information, we have many DB2
instances on a server whose bottleneck is usually RAM/paging space as
opposed to CPU. I thought that in such a situation, it may make sense to
set NUM_POOLAGENTS to a very small value.

Has anybody found that performance suffered when NUM_POOLAGENTS was too
small? Perhaps the overhead required to create and release
pool agents may be small enough that keeping NUM_POOLAGENTS small is
tolerable. (The instances usually have 10 to 30 or so connections,
not thousands).

Thanks,
DF

If you use the get snapshot command, you can get at the instance level:
number of local agents executing in
number of remote agents executing in
high water mark of agents executing
Take your snapshot at regular intervals and pipe the output to file for
V7 and/or use table functions for V8.

If you find in your output that number of agents stolen increases from
snapshot to snapshot, you'd have an indication the number is too small

I'd worry about the number of pool agents when:
A) Running an SMP enables box with many processors (8+)
or
B) running an OLTP environment with a high rate of trans./sec

Creating agents cycle steals away from DB2 but you'd have to benchmark
carefully to find a significant impact with an average of 30 connections
(by the way are those agents connected in or executing in). If
connected in, they may be idle and be available, unless they are
coordinators.

Hi, My hosting provider only allows me to use 50 connections to my MySQL database that my Web site will use. I don't know what this 50 connections means exactly. Does this mean that only 50 visitors to my Web site can access my database through my Web site at one time? Or does this mean that in my code I can only use 50 connections? and like

I'm sorry about this verbose posting. This is a follow-up to my yesterday's posting. Thanks William for your reply. I understand it is a good practice to open connections as late as possible and close them as early as possible. My requirement is as follows: I'm developing a class library that will be instantiated by a COM component. My class library contains functions that perform lot of mathematical calculations and read a lot of data...

I am wondering if there is a way to programmatically detect active connections on a RAS server. My situation is this. An app will be running on the RAS server. This app will have a timer that runs constantly. On each tick, it will look to see if any RAS connections have been established and will display them. Any API's, registry entires, or other means by which I can do this would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance for any...

Hi, In an attempt to create a full-blown webcrawler I've found myself writing a wrapper around the Socket class in an attempt to make it completely async, supporting timeouts and some scheduling mechanisms. I use a non-blocking approach for this, using the call to 'poll' to support the async mechanism - rather than the 'begin' and 'end' functions. I already found that connecting doesn't set the "isconnected" variable correctly...

I'm writing a program that connects to MS SQL Server, on start up it clears some tables in one database, and repopulates them from another database. I would like this to only happen if there are no other connections to the database I'm clearing. Is there any way of checking the amount of active connections on a specfic database within code? Checking active connections by user is also an option if thats the only way to do it as all...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...
