Limbaugh is a foul character, and I don't know if Hitchens really is or not,
but let me clarify an important distinction. Hitchens isn't just an
extremist. He's an extremist who flipped from one extreme to the other.
That's the characteristic of Hoffer's "True Believer," and (I'm not joking
here) that behavior is associated with manic disorders.
That's not to say that such people are always manically disturbed, only that
manic conditions have produced a lot of such people over the years.
Extremists of that type tend to get noticed, and it has been commented upon
in the psych literature.
And it's also true, and not a quip, that we have much better drugs to treat
the condition now. d8-)
