so, i'm using the hash_map that comes with MS visual studio, and it seems to
spend an awful lot of memory. what i basiclly have is something like this:
hash_map<char*, inta;
char* b = new char;
int i;
//some code that initializes b and i
a = i;
i do that for a huge amount of data and end up with 470 MB of memory for the
table. now, if i got it right, it should actually use (17*1+4)*3700000 = 78

Hi there,
I would much appreciate your help with the following problem.
Below is the code that uses a hash_map. I want to release all the memory occupied by the hash_map for other use. Apparently clear() function is not working and the trick with swap() is half working. Does anybody know how to deallocate the hash_map? Thanks in advance.

Hi All,
I am developing my code with Apache stdcxx. I am bound to use STL of
Apache only.
Now today I need hash_map in code but as I learned, it is not
available in Apache since it is not standard c++. Though it is
available with GNU STL.
The code module where I use hash_map will generate separate object
file during compilation. This code module is also using STL string.

I am puzzled, how the hash_map works. In the following declaration, I
expect it to hash on the character-string, but apparently it hash on
(maybe) the pointer value of string?

On http://www.sgi.com/tech/stl/hash_map.html it says that hash_map is
only an extension of the SGI implementation, not a part of the C++
standard. But in g++ 4.1.3 I can manage it to work using the header
<ext/hash_mapand the namespace __gnu_cxx. So, it is present in more
implementations, not just SGI. Is this a thing I can trust in? Will I
always find hash_map on all new g++ versions? Should I care about
portability or it is safe to use...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
