Hi All,
I am facing a problem of writing into and reading from syslog in
Linux Enviornment using C++. The CPU utilization is extremely high of
about 55% and is creating problems for other processes.
ideally the CPU utilization has to be only max of 10% not more.
I have used getline() for reading.
I hope u will please provide me a suitable solution.
Thanks

Of course, you can always throttle the CPU usage by your process, but
what good would that be to have your processor 70% idle?
Just tell the kernel that your log analysis process is not prioritary,
and let the scheduler allocate the time available.
nice -5 log-analyzer &
other-processes &
top
Now, one good way to limit the CPU usage of log processing is to NOT
write any logs.
Note that reducing the log level at the syslog step is already too
late. At least, with syslog-ng, when I activate debugging logs with
no destination for them, syslog-ng still takes 20% CPU, doing nothing
more than /dev/null. (Of course, you can assume that the driver is
also taking 20% CPU only to send the logs).

Has anybody seen this tool? It is awesome. check out
http://vw.vermeer.org/ . It's a php front end for large-scale syslog
deployments. It makes managing syslog in large networks a snap.
The idea is to fifo pipe network syslog into a MySQL database backend.
The php scripts reference the database, and print stuff to the screen.
My Info -> RH9.0 , MySQL 4.0.14, apache1.3.28
I have successfully gotten everything installed, compiled, etc....

Hi again
The Question of Logs, part II. :)
What are the advantages/disadvantages of using syslog() to do the logging
rather than writing the logs with fopen(), fwrite() and fclose()? What
should be kept in mind while using either technique? And, of course,
which is considered to be the better one?
TIA

Hello,
I tried to read in some large ascii files (200MB-2GB) in Python using
scipy.io.read_array, but it did not work as I expected. The whole idea
was to find a fast Python routine to read in arbitrary ascii files, to
replace Yorick (which I use right now and which is really fast, but not
as general as Python). The problem with scipy.io.read_array was, that it
is really slow, returns errors when trying to process large files and it...

Hello,
I'm having what seems to be a deadlock in syslog with the code (wich
comes from a project I'm working on, but I've reduced the test case to
its minimum) I put at the end of this messsage.
It must be compiled with -lpthread. (so the fork could be also a
possible cause of what I'm mentionning).
The "bug" does not occur every times. So you should maybe launch the
prog a few times before the block occurs.

(Sorry for cross-posting).
I need to access large files > 2GByte (Linux, WinXP/NTFS)
using the standard C-library calls.
Till today I thought I know how to do it, namely for
Win32:
Use open(), read(), _itelli64(), _lseeki64() with type __int64
Linux/Cygwin:
#define _FILE_OFFSET_BITS 64
Use open(), read(), lseek() with type off_t

Hi, all:
I just need to parse a unicode file, and assume to get data one line
by one line.
I use _wfopen(), fgetws(), wcslen(), wcsstr(), making it work
normally on Windows platform.
However, when migrate it to Linux platform, issue occurs.
Linux only has fopen() function, and fgetws() could not correctly get
lines, in fact, it gets nothing.

Just out of curiosity:
When would using std::list be more efficient / effective than using
other containers such as vector, deque, etc?
As far as I'm aware, list doesn't appear to be specialized for
anything.
Thanks,

has any idea about this? Many thanks.

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
