something with 'kernel' or '.os.' in its name.

I have a question that is not directly Python-related. But I thought I'd ask the most erudite group that I know... :-) When did Windows start accepting the forward slash as a path separator character? At one time, it was accepted as a truism that Windows (like MS-DOS) was different from Unix because Windows used the backslash as the path separator character, whereas Unix used the forward slash.

I am new to programming in the C / C++ language and I am using a mixture of online materials plus a small collection of C and C++ books. What I basically want to know is how do I know if something I am learning is from the C Language or the C++ Language and should I avoid mixing the two. I am under the impression that C++ is the successor of C but I would imagine at the same time there are some functions that have become obsolete under...

Hi all, During my degree, BEng (Hons) Electronics and Communications Engineering, we did C programming every year, but I never kept it up, as I had no interest and didn't see the point. But now I really want to get back into it as I see a point with GNU/Linux. I want to get my old skills back and write something or help on some projects etc. I need some good books. I used to have one called "A Book On C", but sold it,

I keep getting this error. DETAIL: Failed system call was shmget(key=5432001, size=34037760, 03600). HINT: This error usually means that PostgreSQL's request for a shared memory segment exceeded your kernel's SHMMAX parameter. You can either reduce the request size or reconfigure the kernel with larger SHMMAX. To reduce the request size (currently 34037760 bytes), reduce PostgreSQL's shared_buffers parameter (currently 2048) and/or...

In the C programming language, I/O operation functions are declared in stdio.h, for example, fopen(), fclose(), fwrite(), fread(), fseek() ... But another set of I/O functions are also defined in Unix, for example, open(), close(), read(), write(), lseek() ... Which set of functions is more suitable for I/O task, C library version or Unix version? Thank you

RAW network programming under Windows it's not always possible because of the security limitations that microsoft introduced in the latest Windows versions and that affects WinSocket API. On UNIX systems I'm able to freely send raw packets (for example I'm able to compile IP packets with a src address defined by me) through raw socket API, but if I do the same on a Windows system socket module raises an error. Now I'm searching for...

I'm kind of new to Linux and I've started downloading applications and installing them. Applications are distributed as source code in a ".tar.gz" file. You unzip the file, navigate to the directory, run "configure", then run "make", then run "make install". Anyway, in all the programs I've seen, there's only ever been .c files, and it looks like only gcc has been invoked. Do people in the Linux community not use C++ and distribute their...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
