- In jokes - "there's an error on line 42 of your code" when people
assume anyone who reads posts about stacktraces or "it SEGFAULTS"
without example code it must be psychic?
- Complaining about top-posting or signature quoting?
- A signature that complains about the above?
- A tendency not to make wild assumptions about performance hits for
feature X?
- Generalised rules of thumb that never say never?
- Able to take warnings and error messages seriously ("Sure the compiler
complained a lot, but it was just being silly")

They refer people to the FAQs, have real jobs,
and participate infrequently because they have
side projects that won't get finished if they
spend all their time on these newsgroups. ;-)

Not getting finished on other things beside the newsgroups is a problem
of mine since I began posting here recently. There is always the need to
check for new messages. :)

Never top posts. Never quotes 10 line signatures.

I think true veterans are recognized more by what they don't say rather
than what they do say.

Folks get to a certain point where they are content to just listen, say
very little, and make their few words have immense meaning.

Hi there! I have both PHP 4.0( RPM) installed and MySQL 4.0.20 installed with the mysqld daemon up and running. But when I look at the output of phpinfo() , I do not see it there, which is worrisome and so I tried to recompile PHP and do ./configure with the --with-mysql=path but I don't really know where my mysql's header files should be , is there any way to find that out by using any of the mysql commands? I did try to do...

I just read some stuff about XHTML 2.0 and it sounds fascinating so I have been trying to create a small test doc which has a few graphics files but whenever I submit it to the W3 validator I get this foolishness about mime type="text/html" and then it tries to validate it using SGML (in liew of XHTML 2.0) rules. Obviously this all fails. Is there anything I can do? = = = = = = = Here's my doc: = = = = = = =

Yes, I know that a perfectly vaild PGSQL SQL file could contain only ANSI SQL and therefore not be recognized as PG-related. In that case, though, it would be recognized by Vim's ANSI SQL coloring, and given that's all this file contains, that's no problem. ;)

Compilier will not recognize DataSet object. As you can see below is from a test simple form with no other code. I'm just trying to get any Aspx form to recognize the DataSet object. You can see from the code I am importing System.Data.SqlClient. I can get to DataReader, DataView and DataTable but Visual Studio won't even bring up DataSet on Intellisense, much less compile it. The message I get is: "Reference required to assembly...

I'm just getting started with ASP.NET, using VS 2005. As an exercise, I opened the root web site in VS 2005 and created a simple welcome page. I saved the page as Default.aspx and made sure that name was the first name on the list id the default documents in the IIS control panel. IIS doesn't recognize Default.aspx as the default page for the IIS root web. It will open the page if I type http://localhost/Default.aspx, and if I create an...

Hi, hello, help! I am new to networking so please forgive me if this is a simple question. I have been at this for hours to no avail. I"m trying to network my Mac G5, running OSX 10.4.7 Tiger, a PC laptop running Windows 2000, and an HP Laserjet 4500, with a Linksys Wireless-G router. All are set up with network cords running to the router. The router is working since I can access the internet on both computers. I followed the...

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...
