compiler reports unfamiliar errors in function

20 New Member
Hi all - The following is the code for one of my functions in a program but the compiler is reporting errors. I've also tried declaring the variable temp within the function but the number of errors reported by the compiler increases. Here's the code just for the function with problems:

Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. char options();
  2. {        cout<<"\n\nOption 1: Fahrenheit to Celsius - Press C or 1.\n";
  3.          cout<<"Option 2: Celsius to Fahrenheit - Press F or 2.\n\n";
  4.          cin>>temp;
  5.          return temp;
  6. }
The errors that I get are:

parse error before '{'
syntax error before '<'
syntax error before '>'

Can anybody see what the problem is?

you have a ; on the header of the function definition
Expand|Select|Wrap|Line Numbers
  1. char options();
  2. {
  3.
try removing it - you only have the ; if it is a function prototype

Thank you so much... it works now that I took out the ; and declared the variable within the function.

OK, I'm going to be brave. There is a bug in VS.Net 1.1 that causes random compiler errors. I have raised this issue in posts at least three time in the past couple of months without attracting much interest. But it's driving me nuts. Here's what happens. I'm working on a multi project VB app. happily writing nice inoffensive code - go to compile and the compiler tells me there's a problem in a project I'm not working on. But really...

I am having real trouble compiling this code http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~vganti/birchcode/codeHier/AttrProj.tgz The attachment shows errors when compiled using the current version of g++ in a i386-pc-solaris2.9. Seeing reference to gcc-2.7.2 in the Makefile of the code, I downloaded it and compiled in my home directory. I've seen plenty of articles on this topic but none of them have been able to solve my problem. I am working with an Access 97 database on an NT4.0 machine, which has many Access reports. I want my users to be able to select a report, click on a command button on a form, which will then automatically create the report as a pdf file and save it to the user's machine. I am using Adobe Acrobat (5.0 I think) and have Adobe Distiller as a

Hi, I am automating Access reports to PDF using PDF Writer 6.0. I've created a DTS package to run the reports and schedule a job to run this DTS package. If I PC Anywhere into the server on where the job is running, the job runs sucessfully, PDF files got generated, everything is good. If I scheduled the job to run at the time that I am not logged into the server, Access is not able to print to the printer. The error is pretty...

Within the past few weeks we've been getting a lot of compiler errors in two classes when no errors actually exist. The error always reports as Name '_stepResizeRelocator' is not declared. Where _stepResizeRelocator is an instance (class level) variable. There is no compiler error on the declaration of the variable, only on use. Tthe name of the variable which causes the error changes.

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends, With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
