Quick qstn: How do I leave decimal digits...

20 New Member
I've been asked to write a program that calculates the total time worked. I use struct to create variable type time1, and ask the user to enter time in and time out. I convert both to seconds and then subtract time out from time in and have seconds worked. Its mostly done, but this is my question:

Question: When converting seconds back to hrs and mins, how do I leave the decimal digits out and just take the numbers before the decimals and assign them to a variable?

I know how to use modulus to turn the decimals into mins and secs. Our prof wants us to demonstrate the learning of struct which I've done. But this part is the little problem that I'm having. I hope I've been clear as to my problem.
Thanks.

there are only 3600 seconds in an hour so....

some total / 3600 is the number of hours,
Then taking the modulus (that is getting the remainder) of bignumber/3600 we have left the number of seconds OTHER than these hours. We know there are 60 of them in a minute, so we can work out that previousremaind er /60 is the number of minutes, and again the mremainder of thsi function will return the number of seconds:

ie:
toal/3600 (integer arithmetic) is number of hours

((total%3600)/60) is number of mins
ant (total%60) is number of secs

Awesome! Pretty creative use of modulus. You really are DeMan. :)

Hello,
I am having a similar problem and tried your answer but as the time is a decimal number i get the error message "invalid operands of types `float' and `int' to binary `operator%".
Can you only use you answer if there are no decimals or am I doing something wrong?
Thanks

I know, the moduluis operator works for integer number type values so you may first have to convert your decimal time into minutes.

While I don't know whether the modulus operator works for types, I would imagine that if it did, both values would have to be consistent with each other (eg float mod float). As I say, I don't know whether this works, but if you add .0 to the end of the int you are using, you'll soon enough find the answer....

Thanks but I tried that - it just changes the error message to "invalid operands of types `double' and `double' to binary `operator%' "
I just have no idea why it isn't working

It could be it just works for integer values. Decimal time can be converted into seconds (sorry I think I said minutes last time - my bad) as follows

2.54 hours * 60 = 152.4 minutes * 60 = 9144 seconds, TYhen you can use the idea listed above.

The times I have work out as seconds with decimals.
So its 2 hrs 39 mins and 5.2 seconds
I guess this just isn't going to work for me then

unless you are prepared to work in quanities less than a second, you can ignore the split seconds. That is, just treat 5.2 as 5....

You could always try writing your own modulus function that can accept doubles.

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own.... Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

Hello I'm a network technician in training and I need your help. I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs. The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols. I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
