Windows System Restore is terrible

Serves me right, I guess. My Windows machine mysteriously stopped
getting any access to the network. I rebooted, reset the TCP settings,
tried the same connection on my Mac (which worked), ran various wizards,
walked through the utterly useless troubleshooting helper, and still had
no networking.

John extolls the prowess of System Restore, so I decided to give it a
try. I figured since networking was working fine yesterday, I could
System Restore to yesterday. And so I did, and networking was still broken.

So let's try even earlier. I used System Restore to go back to the
earliest time it had. Still no networking. Nuts. Oh well, let's go
back to the future, so to speak.

Except you can't go back.

The day is there, I can click on it, and it makes me wait through some
long progress bar and then it tells me that it couldn't restore. So all
my security updates are gone, all my application installations are
essentially inaccessible (I have to tromp through Program Files and
ignore dire warnings to access them), and I still have no networking.

That's what I get for listening to John.

No doubt he'll reply and tell me how he's had fewer than zero problems
on his thousands of machines. It won't help. This really makes me
appreciate my Mac.

I think also that your mouse must have slipped.
I'm sure you didn't mean to post this here.

I have a need to become familiar with SQL Server 2000 for work. Needless to say I am new to SQL Server any version, but not IT in general. My employer has provided me with the SQL Server 2000 Personal disk from the SQL Server 2000 Enterprise kit as this is reported here on the MSDN web site to be the version that is supported on Windows XP. In fact so many of you kind people confess to having succeeded in doing it. I have tried...

I have just upgraded from VB 4.0 to VB .NET 2002. One program under VB 4.0 was able to shut down or restart the (windows XP) machine using a series of API calls. (Getlasterror, GetCurrentProcess, OpenProcessToken, LookupPrivilegeValue, AdjustTokenPrivilegese, ExitWindowsEx. I am trying to avoid using any API calls if possible and to use managed code instead. I couldn't find any easy way of doing this but searching the Internet with...

Hi All! I have a ASP.NET 2.0 site that works on the Windows 2000 Server. However, when I tried to view this site on my local Windows XP machine, I get "Server Unavailable". If I switch the Windows XP IIS back to ASP.NET 1.1 then I get the Configuration Error (which is understandable because I'm trying to run an ASP.NET 2 site with 1.1 framework). I can however view other ASP.NET 1.1 sites on my local Windows XP machine. It's only the...

Hi All, I understand in older versions of DB2/UDB this was not possible. The following article explains how I might do this http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/db2/library/techarticle/0207kline/0207kline.html Is this still a restriction in version 9.x? I'd specifically like to restore a backup performed on an AIX server to a Windows server.

You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it. First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks, I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>". The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed. This is as boiled down as I can make it. Here is my compilation command: g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp Here is the code in...

Overview: Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...
