Derived classes sometimes need to delegate portions of the work in overridden
methods to methods in their base classes. This was traditionally done with
explicit calls in python, e.g.,
class Derived(Left, Right):
def __init__(self, myarg, larg, rarg):
Left.__init__(self, larg)
Right.__init__(self, rarg)
self.data = myarg
print 'derived'

Docs says that "The compiler does not use an explicit constructor to
implement an implied conversion of types. It's purpose is reserved
explicitly for construction."
I put up code of three cases at the bottom. Hope you can help me understand
the "explicit" keyword and its usage. Specifically,
Is "explicit" keyword only associated with constructor in C++?
What's "implied conversion of types"?

Hi,
I have a problem with explicit instantiation of templates in Visual
C++ 6.0.
I have provided the source below. I have an example of a function
template that produces incorrect output in the code below.
The function

I would be grateful if someone could point out if I am understanding
correctly and suggest ways to improve. Sorry for the long message and
I hope you will kindly bear with it. I have to make it elaborate to
make sure my questions are clear enough.
Let's say I need to write a function whose logic is same for all types
(T) except in the case of T * (including const T *). Furtheremore ,
the function needs to be written differently for...

Hi,
This is a question about whether I am right that a particular syntactic
sugar is missing in C++.
Let me explain with an example. Let us say I have a class for complex
numbers, and I want people to be able to initialize real numbers (like
an object of type double) from it ... in such a context (or if someone
explicitly casts to double), the imaginary part is to be ignored.
However, I certainly do not want people to be able to ask...

All:
I have prepared a .NET 1.1 client application that consumes a remote,
public web service. All the functions work as expected, and, in
general, the application has been successful for my purposes.
I have discovered one bit of behavior that surprises me, however. At
certain times, under heavy server-side loads, my calls to certain web
service methods will time out on the *client* side (proxy timeout). My
assumption was that the...

Hello,
I noticed the following in the "C++ Coding Standards" book. Why should
the code
on line 30 be in error?
Transmogrify accepts a (B obj), and we are passing it a B obj. I
understand why
the other call to transmogrify failed: we disallowed implicit
conversion D->B

Most computers default to English, but sometimes we require a different language, especially when relocating. Forgot to request a specific language before your computer shipped? No problem! You can effortlessly switch the default language on Windows 10 without reinstalling. I'll walk you through it.
First, let's disable language synchronization. With a Microsoft account, language settings sync across devices. To prevent any complications,...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...

Hello
I'm a network technician in training and I need your help.
I am currently learning how to create and manage the different types of VPNs and I have a question about LAN-to-LAN VPNs.
The last exercise I practiced was to create a LAN-to-LAN VPN between two Pfsense firewalls, by using IPSEC protocols.
I succeeded, with both firewalls in the same network. But I'm wondering if it's possible to do the same thing, with 2 Pfsense firewalls...
