Hello,
I read someone posted assertions that even the (public) member
function is not static, there are probably only one copy of the
code in the executable. Then except the dependency/independency
on the lifecycle of the object, what is the significant
differences between public member functions and public static
member functions?

I am in the process of reorganizing my code and came across and I came
across a problem, as described in the subject line of this posting.
I have many classes that have instances of other classes as member
variables. So including a forward declaration doesnt help, does it?
Faced with these, I had the following options:
-Include the appropriate header in the header file that contains the
class definition that has a member variable that is...

I though that inline functions should be always visible only in the
compilation unit where they are defined - meaning if compiler cannot inline
them, they should be handled as if declared static. However sample attached
shows VC compiler does not work this way (tested in .NET 2003). When you
compile the sample with inlining enabled (like in default Release config),
the output is A1 = 1, A2 = 2. When run with inlining disabled (Debug),...

Dear all,
Is there a clear distinction how to decide which functions to be
members of a class and which not
How is your attitude (Your general way from your experiences ...)
"If the function changes the state of the object, it ought to be a
member of that object." Reference Accelerated C++, A. Koenig, page 159.

Hello,
I learned that there are five kinds of static objects, namely
1. global objects
2. object defined in namespace scope
3. object declared static instead classes
4. objects declared static inside functions (i.e. local static
objects)
5. objects declared at file scope.

As we know, the keyword "inline" is a bit misleading because its
meaning has changed in practice. In most modern compilers it has
completely lost its meaning of "a hint for the compiler to inline the
function if possible" (because if the compiler has the function
definition available at an instantiation point, it will estimate whether
to inline it or not, and do so if it estimates it would be beneficial,
completely regardless of whether...

I had a lot of research to see how function pointer works. Sometimes,
programmers choose switch keyword and function in each case block can
be called. Sometimes, they choose ordinary function pointer array
instead of switch.
They believe that ordinary function pointer is much faster than
switch. Think of one variable called selectFunction. selectFunction
variable can be the range of 0 through 1,000 or more.
Load selectFunction...

Hello folks,
I am unable to find appropriate documentation on the type promotion of bit-fields when using the generalised comparison operator "<=>".
The problem is that using the GNU compilers, it seems that the internal comparison operator "<=>" tries to promote arguments from unsigned to signed.
This is as boiled down as I can make it.
Here is my compilation command:
g++-12 -std=c++20 -Wnarrowing bit_field.cpp
Here is the code in...

Overview:
Windows 11 and 10 have less user interface control over operating system update behaviour than previous versions of Windows. In Windows 11 and 10, there is no way to turn off the Windows Update option using the Control Panel or Settings app; it automatically checks for updates and installs any it finds, whether you like it or not. For most users, this new feature is actually very convenient. If you want to control the update process,...

Dear forum friends,
With the development of smart home technology, a variety of wireless communication protocols have appeared on the market, such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, etc. Each protocol has its own unique characteristics and advantages, but as a user who is planning to build a smart home system, I am a bit confused by the choice of these technologies. I'm particularly interested in Zigbee because I've heard it does some...

Let's talk about the concept of autonomous AI software engineers and no-code agents. These AIs are designed to manage the entire lifecycle of a software development project—planning, coding, testing, and deployment—without human intervention. Imagine an AI that can take a project description, break it down, write the code, debug it, and then launch it, all on its own....
Now, this would greatly impact the work of software developers. The idea...

The next Access Europe User Group meeting will be on Wednesday 1 May 2024 starting at 18:00 UK time (6PM UTC+1) and finishing by 19:30 (7.30PM).
In this session, we are pleased to welcome a new presenter, Adolph Dupré who will be discussing some powerful techniques for using class modules.
He will explain when you may want to use classes instead of User Defined Types (UDT). For example, to manage the data in unbound forms.
Adolph will...
